i have a conexant smartaudio hd sound "card". lately it have started crashing my pc when i play certain sounds. previously it would just crash and i would lose the sound, while the pc would still work. after i installed an update to windows it started blue screening instead of the sound dropping. any solutions?

Go to the Device Manager.

Locate the Audio Device, right click it and go to Properties.
Click the Details tab, click the drop-down box and select "Hardware IDs"
Right click one of them and click Copy.
Paste it in a post in here. Do it for each if there are multiple IDs listed.

This will fully identify the actual device.

Are you on Win10 or 11?

What are the most recent Windows Updates that got applied in the last 30 days? Or any specific updates you've then noticed having issues with after they got applied.

You should also have Logs for these errors within Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application ~ Which might be able to shed more light on the problem(s) at-hand. As it might not be the audio driver, but something else.

One time I had audio issues before going external, one issue was that stupid NVIDIA HD Audio driver conflicting with another audio driver.

Well common sense says go and disable all other audio devices you do not need or use; such as NVIDIA HDMI/DP Audio. And the only reason to do that is because WinOS is dumb and likes to randomly push audio to one of them. So disabling the ones you don't use fixes that problem.

But also, having something like Conexant HD Audio speaks volumes for being on a crap-tastic Laptop as well.

at least it is not realtek audio. that really is bad. the problem is that a windows update destabilised my system. it rarely had blue screens before that update and after that it became very unstable. i need to find out what update that was.
Everything that I could suggest, I will not suggest because people here would insult me for helping you with said suggestions. :chirp:

This is not solution only comment. So starting windows 7 microsoft disabled sound hw dma. Means your sound card has hw buffer and application wants to access this buffer. But windows not denied. Boom blue screen error ocurred.

Only solution to this issue updating sound hw driver.

Another problematic issue from windows hdaudio sys driver.
Only disabled with sysinternals autorun application. Open autorun and change driver tab. Disable hdaudio. Very expert solution.

i tried to update my driver but, i found no driver to update to. i am still willing to update my driver however, if someone can tell me where to find an updated driver.

Why do you even use a sound card? Most computers have good audio built in.

Last time i used a sound card was in an old core 2 duo pc that had crackling/buzzing audio…

Just do a system restore before the last batch of updates.

Again are you on Win10 or 11?
neither, i am running windows 8.1. i just need to know which update it was that led to the instability. then i uninstall only that.

"when i play certain sounds."

Can you describe this any more? any patterns?

Any information in the Event logger?
+ using only unofficial and questionable patches can take you only deeper in the rabbit hole.

the menu music in megaman x dive offline. i had to turn the music off and then it never crashes. then certain videoes on youtube directly cause it. no other games cause that issue.
