Optical displayport cable
Is it worth it over the normal one?

It's only worth it if your displayport cable needs to be longer than 8~10 feet (2.5m <-> 3m). If you need a long displayport run of say 15 foot or longer it should be optical or it probably won't work correctly. But for anything shorter then optical displayport cables are no different than normal copper cables.

I have a 15m one. The PC is in another room.
It is Dp 1.4.
Where are the full speed Display port 2.1 cables?
I cannot locate them.

at under 3m/10ft you dont need optical, there are standard dp cables that will work

but imho, use another pc and stream to it for another display farther than that
for the $100+ you can get a pi
The prices on Optical are a bit ridiculous and you don't need that really unless going above 50 feet or so. For the shorter cable lengths you can do HDMI or DP over CAT5

That's fine for 1080p @ 60hz, anything higher like 1440p @ 144hz for example wouldn't work on a copper displayport cable at that distance (15m is about 50ft). It wouldn't even turn on to display signal if someone was trying to use 1440p @ 144hz @ 50ft for displayport. HDMI probably wouldn't even do that either.
15m is the max limit for HDMI / DP "passive" cables.

If you even bought one that long, I'd return it. Get your money back.

It's fine for even 2160 @ 60Hz really; however doing higher refresh rates @ 1080p or 1440p; you would most likely have it losing signal.

yea i tried a few 50ft hdmi cables, and they did not even work at 720p
even tho they were labeled 8k and other stuff
Well I can confirm that 2160p/60 was of no issues @ 30 feet using POSTTA HDMI Flat Cable.

Sorry I never got a chance to try 50 feet cables.

But yea 15 meters (50 feet) is what the specs says on paper for HDMI / DP

So yea for longer then
15 feet (240Hz or less)
20-30 feet (60-75Hz)
I would try the CAT5 method.

yea, we ended up using the monoprice cat5e adapters/extenders
https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=8121

just be aware that extenders and optical hdmi/dp cables are directional

yea i just realized that. Seems like theres no real benefit unless i need an extremely long cable

I am running a 3440 x1440 120Hz monitor with no issues. It is a fibre cable.

Not on a 50 foot copper displayport cable you aren't. That's physically impossible due to the limitations of copper.

not copper limitation, but the electrons traveling through it at the speeds and pulses required
they like to group together and change each others paths, making high freq communications more difficult, esp at longer distances

but there are better cables, that use thicker wires and more twists and more shielding and insulation to prevent crosstalk and interference in the data transferred
but that costs more making the longer cable that work at the higher speeds cost even more

Good to know. When I got the Dp 1.4 one, the Dp 2.1 full sped was not around.

Hopefully they will drop in price by the time I upgrade my monitor.

It is annoying that DP 2.1 can only go about 2m for standard cables.
