Cpu and mobo upgrade caused fps drops

Hello everybody! I recently upgraded from i5 12400f paired with msi pro h610m-e to the i5 12600k paired with asus tuf gaming b760 plus wifi d4.

Firstly i upgraded the CPU only but when i noticed the stuttering and fps drops, i blamed it on the h610 and upgraded it too. Now with both upgraded and bad performance, i don’t know what to do anymore. I don’t even know how the 12400f was perfect but this 12600k is performing horrible? Could it be a faulty CPU?

Also i got a 650w psu which should be enough, 16gb of ram and all drivers up to date! Any advice helps, thank you!

Looks pretty weak for 12600K, check your temperatures during gaming.
If temps are too high and cause thermal throttling might need to upgrade to something better like this:

yea the h chipsets are for office or light work pcs
not gaming

paired with an i5 or higher they will throttle at load due to weak vrm configs

looks like 8 phases total, no cooling on any of them = ~20w ea
a few to imc and igpu, 1-2 ea
probably 4-6 phases to cpu cores, = ~80-120w max to cpu
it will never boost for long because they overheat and throttle before the cpu can get warm

keep the stock style cooler on it, never use tower coolers on boards with no vrm heatsinks
tower coolers remove airflow from the board, and will make the mosfets overheat and throttle sooner and for longer

Yep. Reinstalled windows and got all the latest drivers for everything !

Checked in gta 5 and got between 50 and 55 degrees celsius under 20-25 percent usage and it was stuttering like crazy :(

What was your framerate? GTA V has a very weird issue where it starts to stutter when your framerate is too high.

correct is better than latest

get the drivers from the mobo mfg site, never windows update

It's rated for 180 watt T.D.P. 12600kf has a maximum turbo power of 150 watts. A better cooler might help it perform better, but the existing cooler should suffice.

However, the C.P.U. cooler only really removes heat from the C.P.U. and ejects it into the case. Kinda wouldn't help if the inside of the case is saturated with heat. I'd suggest that you populate the case fan mounts if you haven't already.

Maybe open up the case and blow a case fan at it as a test to check and see if air flow is potentially the problem.

Can you put back the old cpu in the new board to see if it fixes it? Or maybe you are playing a game that doesnt know how to handle efficiency cores? That is the only difference between these cpus (besides clock speed), your old 12400f didn’t have efficiency cores. Could try disabling them in bios to see if that helps.

Unfortunately i don’t have the 12400F anymore but i’ll try to mess around with the bios a little bit. Aside from disabling the e cores, i heard that asus and some other manufacturers add some useless “tweaking” features to their mobos (like disabling the wattage limit) and are applied by default. Im going to try to change them too and hopefully it will work. Thank you !

The airflow shouldn’t be a problem as im using a case that came with 6 pre-installed fans and i haven’t touch them because i was scared of messing up the airflow (MAG FORGE 120A AIRFLOW)

What was your framerate? GTA V has a very weird issue where it starts to stutter when your framerate is too high.

On gta 5 i had around 180 fps on very high settings. Those 180fps would drop to as little as 5 fps, and it would do it pretty often. Same thing happened on fortnite. I’ve played both games on the 12400F too but i had no problem and i was getting about the same fps (without the drops and stuttering)
