Gpu Running @ PCI x8 4.0 instead of x16
Hello,

Just noticed my gpu runs @ x8 4.0 speed instead of x16. I dont have m2 installed on gen4 pci slot.
Also my PCI x16 Max Speed stuck at x8 in BIOS. I tried the most common solutions found on internet, just as removed and reseated the gpu, changed my ssd slot but nothing helps.BIOS doesn't let me change the PCI_E x16 setting and it still stucked at x8.

Specs if needed >> https://valid.x86.fr/zukqgx

I'm thinking of a possible hardware failure but if u have any advice, i'd gladly hear them.

Thanks.

If running on 1080p, x16 is only a 1% performance increase but if you are in fact using the proper PCIe x16 lane, I would investigate more into the issue - if running 2K, 4K, or 8K, this is when the x8 and x16 lanes come in higher performance impacts but also should be investigated further as well (some even put 2K up there with 1080p with minimal impact using either PCIe lanes x8 or x16). :snurse:

Sometimes, GPU sag might be a culprit if not using a GPU bracket and/or having steel PCIe ports - also, broken or failing GPU PCIe locking supports could cause the issue.

Some other people around here will have more information, specific to your issue, this is just my experiences/knowledge. :chirp:

Julien, cut it out. Sep 20, 2024 @ 12:03pm
Update the BIOS. There have been several releases since January 2021. The latest mentions the RTX 4000 Series.
TUF GAMING Z590-PLUS BIOS 1801[www.asus.com]
Version 1801 9.13 MB 2023/01/04 "1. Improve system stability 2. Improve compatibility with NVIDIA RTX40 series cards “Before BIOS update, please download Intel ME update tool from ASUS support site, and update ME firmware to Version 15.0.21.1549 to ensure optimized system settings.”"

1) The PCIe 4.0 x16_1 socket does not share lanes with the M.2_1 (4.0 x4) socket. Read the manual.
2) Reseat the GPU, clean the contacts.

I do like the looks of that BIOS revision that states, "1. Improve system stability" as well.

imma update bios.

Updated bios. https://imgur.com/a/IjVQPbP

Still showing x8.

I think mobo is toast. Not just GPU-Z, bios also showing x8 max.

And I take it manually that the x16 is grayed out - perhaps Google specifically that board and issue.

Yep there are buttload of ppl who suffers from the same fate. Bios 1801 supposed to fix that i guess. Also without bios 1801, some rtx 40 cards running at Pci 3.0 gen still. Mine is gen 4 but x8 with 1801. :P

In your PCIe settings make sure you've disabled PCIe Bifrucation as that will split the PCIe 4.0 x16_1 slot into 3x separate ports configured as x8, x4, x4.

Install your M.2 SSD into the top-most M.2 slot labeled as M.2_1 which is PCIe x4 directly from the CPU
In the Onboard Devices Configuration in the BIOS, is the option for the Hyper M.2X16 disabled? PCIe bifurcation is described on page 20 (1-8)[dlcdnets.asus.com].

No disable option. Just auto.

what cpu, mobo and what slot is the gpu plugged into?

not all x16 length slots are electrical 16 lanes

PCI-E x16 top slot near cpu

Sometimes GPUZ doesn't show the correct PCIe bus speed, see that '?' beside your PCIe Bus specs" Click on it and and run the brief test render test, it'd force your GPU to run and hopefully, show the correct speed.

bios is limiting it to x8

4.0 x8 is probably enough for the gpu

but a future bios update may fix it

the nvme m.2 slot is above the gpu, can you try pulling that to see if bios can us it at x16?
That's idle speed. You have to run the render test to see it jump to x16.

Click on that tiny question mark (?)
