Yes you can run win 95 and 98, unsure on hardware acceleration option specifically but when you setup the vm you can choose what resources to allocate to the vm.

You will need installation media and key for the os too to legit run it.

Before improvements in compatibility i used to run some less demanding older games through vms like this.

Make sure to not have this virtualization running when you play certain modern titles even in the background the anti cheat system could flag you by mistake.

Yes, virtual machines can run older versions of Windows.

Hardware acceleration support will differ per virtual machine software.

When they do support hardware acceleration it is typically only OpenGL, Vulkan and certain versions of DirectX. They do not support legacy graphics APIs such as Glide.

PCem is a piece of software which specializes in emulating specific retro (PC) hardware configurations. I have never used it, so I do not know how well it works.

i already have installation discs with product keys for both windows 95 and 98. i just kept them around. they are from the 00s.

GPU passthrough is not easy to set up, and these OSs do not support modern hardware.

there is an emulated gpu. that gpu did originally have hardware accelleration so, enabling its hardware accelleration should be enough.

The virtual GPU does not support relevant graphics APIs for retro gaming, nor are there drivers for these OSs to use these virtual GPUs.

that is incorrect. the emulated gpu is based on a real gpu, which there is drivers for. i did run knights and merchants the peasant`s rebellion in windows xp on virtual pc. how do i install windows 98 and 95? just using the disc did nothing.

I don't think these old discs were bootable. you probably need a dos diskette to run the setup
