Wtf is the deal with this gfx card?
This thing is a monster.

Got a rx 7900 xtx a few months ago. Ive seen it spike. Transient spikes. Please note im using amd adrenaline for feedback.

The one i have has a board wattage of 370 watt but since ive had it ive seen it do this.

Forza horizon 5 wattage consumption spiked to 420 watt for a second
Starfield wattage consumption spiked to 550 watt for a second
Pinball fx, knightrider table spike to 630 watt for a second.

Wth??? 630 watt??? My card only has 3 power connectors. It's not a misread. I'm seeing the same in harwareinfo and gpu z. It's honestly spiking up as hard as that on occasions. No wonder people were having problems with these cards crashing. Yeah check your power supply!!! I've at least got mines on a 1000 watt seasonic vortex!

do you have stuttering in games?

the card has caps to help level out draw from the psu
its only measured at one instance, probably the peak draw for that measuring time period
i am not a power expert but, 630 watts. that is more than the rtx 4090.

And is more than the 3 power connectors attached to it are supposed to deliver. But yet these apps show it as hitting that.

Edit:- Amd adrenaline. Gpu -z and harwareinfo are showing it hitting those values at max.

To a certain degree but no worse than an nvidia card. I was on nvidia before i switched to this card

so i think your system works. i wouldnt give too much on measurements of wattage. it is a lot and its ok, i would say. you chose a topmodel of gfx-board and them use that much power. i understand, that you feel sorry.

7900-XTX definitely spikes closer to 600W occasionally when it comes to some of the higher end partner models like the NITRO+ or Red Devil

Just another example of AMD GPUs being trash. I'll stick to NVIDIA, thanks.

Folks shouldn't have to get a 1000W PSU for a GPU that "might" spike randomly to 600+ W when it should never even be going over 400W

I can't say what exactly is wrong with OP's GPU or setup, but I have a MERC 310 RX 7900 XTX (with power PCIe power connectors as well) on an AM4 X570 mobo and 5700X3D. I have a Corsair HX1000W PSU and I've no issue whatsoever, and running non-WHQL Adrenalin 24.10.37.10 and have played games like BM Wukong, The Forever Winter, and even Lollipop Chainsaw RePop.

No crash, or stutter whatsoever.....maybe hitching since UE5 is used in some of the game. Definitely there's traversal hitching in DSR, but that's normal. In fact, just played some Space Marine 2 where both the CPU and GPU are stressed to some extend, no problemo.

I'm curious though, OP had an nVidia card before the RX 7900XTX, did he wipe his system clean of any remnant of nVidia driver with DDU first?

Well maybe something faulty with THAT particular card OP has then. Like faulty VRMs or something. But if it's spiking like that and not causing any crashes; that's very odd too.

Well, not like 4080 and 4090 wont spike as well. Moral of the story - don`t skimp on PSU.

What is really the problem?
The graphic card is built to spike when additional load is required. Nothing special about this.

The numbers that you see in monitoring software are some kind of estimation. I really doubt the is any real measurement of the current. Spikes are helped by capacitors (like it is mentioned above). They are on graphic card and on the PSU.
630W / 12V = 52,5A (for 1 sec as mentioned by the author)
Corsair RM850x can handle 70,8A on 12V (stable, not only spike).
So nobody needs 1000W PSU for it.

Perhaps, but I'm a believer in getting overpowered, good quality PSUs for my rigs as it's always better to have too much power, than not enough. Regardless of how much a GPU may or may not spike, it's better imo to have a PSU that is considered 'too much' for a system.

When I first got my Corsair HX1000, it was for an R9 3900X + RX 6900XT build, where possibly a 750W PSU would suffice. But, as per norm, I'd gotten the HX1000 because I knew I'd be upgrading in the course of the following few years since that build (as I'd mentioned in previous post) and one thing I did not have to worry about was the PSU. It handled all the upgrades with ease, hence my philosophy of buying overpowered PSUs.

Heck, my 2nd rig, R9 3900X + Nitro+ RX 6900 XT is being easily powered by an Enermax MAXREVO 1500W PSU, plenty of PSU headroom for upgrades I were to be so inclined.

Trigger alart.
The first time I played BF1942 I stop playing it, because it looked old and jaggy using a Nv card. Then I bought a ATi 9800P and 1942 came to life. ATi didn’t take as big as hit using AA like Nv did. BF2 I recall a roof missing on a building though. The roof to come with the next driver update. ; )

The first PC I bought was pretty much a throw away when it came to upgrading it. PSU where around 150w, but I used 300w. The PSU could never be too big and your hardware can never be to cold was my model to building. Because I like to eliminate as many problems from the get go as I can and stay away from bare minimum and over kill on PSU and cooling.

I like full tower cases myself and the last PSU I bought 13 years ago I thought was 1000w, but notice its 1350w. Should be able to get away with 650w, some will say 850w, but I’ll be 1000w minimum, since it’s where to over kill.

Speaking of trash, which our games have become lately your almost better off just buying a console.

The last good BF game was BF3 and since G-sync I was able to extend the life of my PC only needing 60-100fps, so I was still playing BF on ultra while peeps were building new PCs. I wanted to build when BFV came out, but Intel had security issues, unless you went with there flag ship, which I think was $800 bucks. Lol. I dreamed of a Nv 2080, but notice the Ray tracing gimic that just crippled the cards with it on. Making the 2080 over priced and over kill with Ray tracing off. So I walked out of the store empty handed.

Now comes BF2042 and the 4090. What $2000 bucks! Again I walk out of the store empty handed and my head hanging low. : ( Building a new system didn’t become a reality, until I turn to AMD. 6950xt – 5800x3d and topped off with Oled. My bro wanted the 4090, but ended up going with 7900xtx – 7800x3d. After one look of my Oled he went from 24” to 35”. He didn’t save anything, since he went with one of the best mobo Gigabyte had and also bought a 1000w or better PSU.

Moral of the story I wouldn’t be a good budget builder. Lol.

^ the fact that you don't realize BF2042 isn't worth playing says a lot.

Why are you even comparing a 7900 anything to a 4090. That's hilarious. Good comic relief before bed time. Wow
