Semi-high CPU temp while downloading games.
I've never before paid attention to the temp while downloading anything but recently my old fan ripped and i got new one so i'm keeping close attention to temp and it's 50-60 while downloading. Now like 48-50 sometimes 60 when i turned off steam setting.

It does seem like my cpu is overcloked atm.
50C to 60C is not high at all, unless this is an old AMD FX era CPU which had much lower thermal limits than modern CPUs.

While downloading a game on Steam, it is also decompressing and installing it. This takes CPU cycles, which causes it to produce more heat.

There's nothing unusual with that.

Yeah i thought so too but as i said never paid attention to cpu temp before so mostly i know 80 bad below that fine although if it's consistent 70 that would be bit worrying. I also have freshly changed thermal paste and cpu is i9-10900k 3.7ghz but now it's 4,9 cuz overclocked. but planning to upgrade into like amd ryzen 9 7900x or 7900x3d depending on sales at christmas time.

steam uses the cpu to decompress files as it downloads them
its the way steam downloads work

browser/file downloads do not use cpu since those are not compressed downloads

Ah i see it's most likely always been that but since i just got pc fixed and it had cpu temp issues i've been keeping eye on it.
70C is nowhere near concerning, and even 80C is not unheard of for the majority of modern CPUs.

Lower might be more preferable, but those are reserved thresholds compared to the typical behavior of many modern CPUs. AMD's current CPUs for example, may typically boost right up near TjMax, which is typically around 95C on most models, or 90C for the X3D models. This is how many modern CPUs operate; if they have headroom, they will boost.

When my cpu fan broke it kept going to like 100C in under 5min haha. New cpu fan did the trcik now it stays in consistent 60 might go to 70 for a bit.

Under 85*C is perfectly fine.

If the download speed is really high, when using ssds this generally does increase cpu usage quite bit. So overall I don't see a problem now that the fan is replaced

50-60C is more of the low side tbh. nothing wrong with that
What happens is when you download a game. You also decompress its files and install the game at the same time which leads to increased load on the CPU compared to normal downloads through your web browser

idk if it's the case anymore... but it used to be some chips actually idle higher than when under moderate load.

has to do with how CPUs work I think, and how they're actually always kinda "processing" even if they're not doing anything.

check your task manager for something called "system idle process"... that's literally the amount of your CPU that's idly processing nothing with it's clocks.
