I just bought a Macbook Pro 16”.
Do I need a case, keyboard cover, or screen protection?

My grandpa is using a keyboard cover and it collects moisture under it

Well, I mean, it's an expensive laptop. You don't want to spill on it and have a broken keyboard as a result so a silicon membrane for the keyboard[www.amazon.com] can save you some heartache, even if it makes the typing experience a bit worse.

An exterior case can also prevent it from getting scratched[www.amazon.com], which protects the resale value. Macs tend to hold their resale value a bit better than P.Cs.

Laptops don't really need screen protectors 'cause you don't lay 'em flat on their screen, walk around while using them or put 'em in your pocket, and when you put them in a bag you fold them up. I'm not going to guarantee it's impossible for you to ruin the screen mind you, but the odds of it happening seem relatively slim.

No, you don't need any of this. Get apple care and don't worry about it.

I put my laptop in a hard, slim case to protect it. This hard case goes neatly into my bag when I'm out carrying it around.

But when I'm actually using it, it's nude.

Same is true for my Steam Deck. In it's case, in my bag when I'm running around. Au naturel when I'm actually using it.

I figure I'm much more likely to do something damaging when I'm carrying it and running around. As a point of comparison, my last laptop lasted much longer than my co-worker's. We bought them around the same time. His died after about two years. Mine still lives on. Mine stayed in a case. His got tossed into the back seat of his pickup.

Apple Care[www.apple.com] isn't a silver bullet:

Every Mac comes with one year of hardware repair coverage through its limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary technical support. AppleCare+ for Mac extends your coverage from your AppleCare+ purchase date and includes unlimited incidents of accidental damage protection, each subject to a service fee of $99 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or $299 for other accidental damage, plus applicable tax.1 In addition, you’ll get 24/7 priority access to Apple experts by chat or phone.

I'd rather buy five external cases for $20 than pay a $99 service fee even just once.

Moreover, I'm not sure if applecare covers liquid damage or not. Apple is vague enough that it is better not to risk it[support.apple.com], esp. since there may be a service fee involved.

Nevermind: I found the provision regarding the accidental damage protection in the present Applecare terms[www.apple.com].

3.2 Services for Accidental Damage from Handling (“ADH Service”)
If during the Plan Term you submit a valid claim notifying Apple that the Covered Device has failed due to accidental damage from handling resulting from an unexpected and unintentional external event (e.g., drops and damages caused by liquid contact from spills) (“ADH”), Apple will, at its discretion and subject to the service fee described below, either (i) repair the defect using new or previously used genuine Apple parts that have been tested and pass Apple functional requirements, or (ii) exchange the Covered Device with a replacement product that is new or comprised of new and/or previously used genuine Apple parts and has been tested and passed Apple functional requirements. Exclusions apply as described below.

Each time you receive services for ADH is a “Service Event.”
You are eligible to receive unlimited Service Events for your Covered Device while the Plan is active, up to the date the Plan is cancelled or otherwise terminated. Requests for Service
Events submitted and received by Apple after the Plan has been cancelled or terminated will not be covered by the Plan.

Important: Please refer to Section 4 for exclusions on provision of ADH Service.
The following service fees apply to each Service Event:
Mac Apple Display
Tier 1 ADH Service Event
- Screen Only ADH Damage
- External Enclosure-only ADH Damage
US$99 US$99
Tier 2 ADH Service Event
- All Other ADH Damage
US$299 US$299

*Fees exclude applicable taxes payable by you
To qualify for the Tier 1 ADH Service Event fee, the Covered Device must have no additional damage beyond the screen-only damage (if applicable) or the external enclosure-only damage that would prevent Apple from repairing the display or external enclosure. ADH damage to the Apple-branded stand and/or VESA mount used with your Apple-branded display will be treated as external enclosure-only ADH Damage. A Covered Device with additional damage will be charged the price of the Tier 2 ADH Service Event fee.

Please note that if you seek service under this Plan in a country other than your country of purchase, the service fee will need to be paid in that country’s currency and at that country’s applicable rate –for further details, including regarding applicable fees by country, please visit the AppleCare+ support website at apple.com/legal/sales-support/applecare/applecareplus/.

Have fun possibly spending $300 for your accidental damage repair because you refused to buy a $20 keyboard cover to protect against a spill. That is not even to mention the subscription fee by the way.
