Intel Core i5 7400 safe gaming temperature? (80oc-90oC)
Hello sadly I am currently unemployed and unable to upgrade my hardware in a loooong time (and few money moment ATM)
My PC:
CPU: Intel Core i5 7400 @ 3.00GHz
GPU: 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (MSI)
Motherborard: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. H110M-H-CF (U3E1)

Gaming is one of my main hobbies, but the question is, I am very paranoid about temperature; usually my CPU reaches up a bit above 80oC-85oC while gaming(GPU only 70-71oC).

I have read contradictory info; some say I am fine below 100 oC, others say above 80 oC for long times will reduce my life spam.

(I already opened and cleaned it; it helped a bit but not totally.)

TL;DR So my question is, my CPU is fine with temps 80oC-85oC while gaming for a couple of hours? (I am more concerned for the CPU's life spam since, as I said, I cannot upgrade my PC for my personal situation, and my PC is super important to me.)

The max temp for your processor is 100C. With 85C, you are well below and safe.
Don't touch thermal paste and the cooler. Especially if you don't have budget for potential repair. You have much bigger chance to damage your PC by fiddling around with processor cooler, than by the temps you currently have.
Most of the things said on internet about thermal paste is just for the clicks for youtubers. Ignore it.

<90c as long as its not throttling

but its good to have some headroom for when a fan fails or something else goes wrong

the h110 board will not be able to push enough power to the cpu to overheat it
4 phases total no cooling on their mosfets

the board can only deliver around 40w to the cpu cores, i5 7400 is 65w

Thermal paste in places where heat pipes are sandwiched between fins with a fan on top.
Thermal paste on the backside where large soder spots are no sandwich effect so air doesn't fuel that space
Thermal Tape to keep things from prevent air flow for occurring.
Then there is the various that have no thermal of any kind and are left open to be able to reach those temps to break so upgrades can be made.

Where the CPU sits now is there space between the tower and the wall in all direction good half yard so the tower dead center gets clearance in 360.

Is the power supply been feather dusted with a paint brush or vacuumed or something anytime?
Have you attempted laid flat, upside down, on the ground?

When off for 48 hours at what temp does the cpu start at?

For self around 39 degrees at some point might be 33 at start... end is around 50 during loadings and upwards to 76.

I’ll try to apply thermal paste when I can.

Idle is around 40oC-45-oC (something that ire ad is normal especially with my notherboard) I have noted peaks of around 60oC after I turn on Pc my, I assume programs starting to run updating and stuff (I rarely left it off 48 hours, I use it daily often leaving it 2 days on)
100°C is the Tjmax and I wouldn't keep the temp around that and considering it's just a 65W CPU probably running off a stock cooler I'd get a better one.
OK my 2 cents.....given its age if you have never changed the thermal paste its time.....also because of age i would also do it to the GPU for the fun of it as a small tube should do both without issue.....

it will cost money but very little depending on country.....in the US we can get a tube for 5 to 10 dollars....for me i do it every 2 to 3 years as i see temps creep up from what i know my system runs....

with that board the cpu will never be able to hit 90-100c
the vrm config is way too weak

and i would tell you to ignore anyone saying a 100C or anything close to it is fine....its not.....let me know when i have a youtube account.....

Thank you people for your replies.

In some very demanding games (that I am trying to avoid), it gets to around 92 oC.

A few days ago I downloaded an Intel’s app to check if my CPU was fine; it made a test; it was scary, took several minutes, and yes, got very close to 98 oC or more. The good thing is that according to the test, the CPU is fine.

That’s the confusing part; I assume still below 90 oC idle is reasonable (I hope).

what cpu cooler?
stock from the i5, or an i3 or pentium g or no cooler at all?

Nothing; I didn’t buy anything, and when I opened it, I only saw one fan, I assume for the CPU (and IDK if the 1050 ti has other fans inside). And it has some years of dust accumulated!

It improved when I cleaned the dust around and the fan. I could do a better job, but I was afraid to break down something and make it worse! But it seems it helped some.

That's a bit high, even for a stock cooler assuming you have a ATX build. I would try new thermal paste if you haven't, possibly find a cheap air cooler online (Thermalright as an I.E and usually comes with a tube of paste included) and make sure case ventilation is well. Cool air in, warm air out - add fans if need be.
I rather stay under 80c and will cap the fps if it goes over. I wouldn’t bother re pasting and would get a better cooler, if you don’t already have a decent after market. I usually take the gpu out and the cpu fans and blast everything with my air compressor every so often.
yea it is an older build, just cleaning the dust will help

but the h x10 boards are really meant for the pentium g or maybe i3 cpus
not i5/i7/i9 even tho they are 'supported' but only because the board will be throttling them with any sustained load
