Just bought a new xbox one controller to play Fallout. I can't connect controller to my pc.
i tried blue tooth with the controller in share mode and nothing.
I tried using a wired connection and nothing.
It's a brand new controller out of the box. I am lost. Any help is appreciated.

the first gen (face button plastic does not cover the xbox/home button) do not support bt
the later gen controllers with xbox button plastic also covers the face buttons and sticks support bt

x360 wireless controller so not support usb at all, only to charge the controller if using rechargeable battery packs

First connect via USB DataSync cable and instal driver from Microsoft Catalog. Then install Xbox Accessories from Microsoft Store App and check/updat Controller Firmware

Enable Xbox controller in Steam Settings.

If Fallout 4 or Fallout 76, Enable the controller via in-game Settings

Does the controller light up at all?
And if it does turn on, does the controller work at all outside of Fallout 4?
Sometimes I've used https://hardwaretester.com/gamepad before to see if a controller is actually connected and usable.

Otherwise, if it's just Fallout, I have had issues with the game ignoring the controller at startup if it sees a keyboard key was pressed. Try avoiding any mouse movements or keypresses after clicking play and only use the controller in the main menu.

Definitely check to see if the game has controller supported turned on.

Did you check if the controller is even visible on "devices" or "device manager?" If not, then either the cable is bad, your port, or your controller.

If it is 1st gen Xbox controller, it might need the driver from the Windows Update catalog to be manually installed...

Yes you want Xbox enabled in the Steam Client settings. And if the game in question has native controller support then go to the game properties and disable Steam Input.

But yea I don't know very many games where it doesn't let you use KB+MS+Controller all at the same time but Fallout 4 and 76 are ones I know first hand that do not. As you must launch the game and then go into Settings and turn on the controller. If memory serves me correct, some of the Assassins Creed games were like that as well.

Is it an xbox one controller or xbox 360 controller?
It’s not easy to connect an xbox 360 controller to PC as you need a special dongle to do that. Charging cable won’t work.
Does your PC even support Bluetooth?

When you connect via USB does it show up in the windows control panel (settings - search for "controller" select "set up USB game controllers") where you can do the calibration?

Xbox one Wireless Controller, the box don't say what gen.
I am guessing then that it is first gen and I just threw away my money.

I think I installed the driver, the controller isn't showing up on the accessories app so can't go any further. The light just blinks for a few and then turns off when I press the button.

You should have bought a chinese one like flydigi, 8bitdo, gamesir or gullikit. They all have hall effect.

It is a brand new controller that I just bought. The light turns on when I press the button, it blinks for a bit then turns off. I pressed the pair button and pc don't detect the controller with blue tooth. I tried to connect with the usb cord. It rumbles for a sec when I plug it, the cord is fine. But nothing happens on the pc. Don't detect the controller at all.
I haven't tried on any game because the pc don't detect the controller.

It doesn't detect the controller at all. I can't seem to find the driver in the microsoft store, only the accessories app.

It's not the game, the pc won't detect a brand new controller at all. I press the light and it blinks and I hold down the pair button and pc don't detect. I tried with the usb cord. The controller rumbles a bit then nothing. The port is good, the cord is good, the blue tooth is good. The controller is brand new.
