grab a dp to hdmi adapter or cable (they are both directional)
then use hdmi audio directly to the receiver
set nvidia control panel to output only sound hdmi, and video to dp
And the TV is not messing it up, I am using eArc with passthrough.
I think I figured out what it was. It's when the audio codec swtiches between games using dolby digital and the big picture mode sounds which I assume are encoded in stereo PCM or something.
Having windows set to 'spatial audio' to allow dolby digital be selected in sound options is not required to allow games to run in multi channel audio.
I think what was happening was the game was sending dolby 5.1 using its own encoders, and then when the game exited, windows tried to intercept and upsample the stereo to 5.1 and it gets messed up.
Disabling spatial audio in windows and setting surround sound for each game in the settings appears to have fixed this.
