bought new laptop and fan is loud? how to manage noise levels
got a new laptop and the fan is noticeable even when its sitting there not doing anything.

how do i undervolt the cpu and gpu on windows 11? i have rtx 4060 gpu.

i was thinking maybe theres some processes going on in the background needlessly happening which i can stop and make this thing go quiet.

its 50 degrees sitting at idle with the fan on which makes no sense.

no physical problems and it plays games fine. what sort of processes or things should i check?

things i done:
- system power management for cpu - set at 97%
- passive cooling policy set
- uninstalled bloatware
- task manager - disabled all startup apps listed
- norton - chose quiet mode and disabled system idle
- have a small stand for the back part of laptop to enable it to breath
- room is nice and cool, not dusty at all
- msi center - in user scenarios, set to quiet
- nvidia experience - selected quiet mode
- updated windows and software. i dont know how to update the bios.

the laptop i bought is 2 months old from ebay. it plays games fine, and when playing games the fan doesnt go hardcore - but still can be heard.
i was thinking of taking it to my laptop repair shop down the road so they can inspect dust and the thermal paste inside.

but is there anything else i can do?

thanks

ya my lappy sounds like jet engine

it rarely overheats but the fans get loud and keeps it cool very well

Which Laptop? And how old?

What is the CPU clock and load? (meaning, does it constantly run at max speed maybe, and does it actually have stuff to do)
Did you install windows yourself, or by manufacturer? (Considering missing power management drivers)

I'm a bit afraid that you are out of luck. It looks like normal Windows behaviour. My work laptop shows about 60% memory used and 10% processor with all apps closed. It seems you bough power/gaming laptop with strong GPU and CPU, together they make a lot of heat. Often they are on the same "cooling line", keeping each other warm.

Why do you need Norton? I have no idea if disabling it will help anything, but I would try.

What you can also try, is to make Ubuntu installer pendrive and boot from it. Don't install anything, just boot from pendrive. If you hear no difference, then the hardware is probably built this way. If it is more quiet, then it is Windows causing unnecessary load.

Don't mess up with thermal paste on new laptop. It really doesn't make sense. I also doubt you can undervolt laptop CPU/GPU. Changing voltage is a feature to allow overclocking. That is usually not enabled on laptops.

clean it
and/or get a get a new fan
or get one of the exhaust blowers to pull air from its vents

ones like this actually work good

would repaste....2 reasons why.....a chance to clean out the heat sink and make sure it has air flow.....and second over the fact many makers use cheap garbage thermal paste on their laptops......

if you cant find a tear down video for your model look for one that is close to it as makers tend to stick to the same laptop shell and just change the guts......

For those that have the Nvidia app. Check your task manager to see if you have "presentmon" as it should be at the top of your CPU resources being used. It takes 10% CPU performance and is a metrics and telemetry recorder that has the fans blasting. I have been ending that process and the fans return to normal. You will also hear it persist after closing games for an indefinite period of time which is what prompted me to look into my task manager.

your best bet is to put it in another room and then connect it to external display with a long cable. you can also use a USB extender and a USB hub. that is what i did.

Other than suggestion given here, I'd suggest getting some version of laptop stand to help cool the laptop more effective, and perhaps allow the cooling fans within the laptop to not rev up. I have a Lenovo Legion 5 Pro 16" laptop and I always use a laptop stand, in fact, I have two, one with active cooling (2x fans) and one without fans.

It helps to raise the laptop a little higher off the table as well, like with a pair of laptop stands/legs that can be stuck onto the bottom back of the laptop to raise it a little off the table for better airflow.

how can i find out if its at max speed? are you referring to the fans?

i opened msi centre and in the extreme mode where you edit the fans, i lowered them down so when not playing its quiet now and only turns on when gaming. i suppose thats the best i can do? no laptop runs quiet when playing AAA games
