"Invalid Platform" on Zorin OS 17.2 Pro
I just installed Steam on my Linux laptop running Zorin OS 17.2 Pro. I ran the Steam updater to make sure I have the latest version. When I try to Play Now on any of my games I get the error, "<game name> Digital Edition. An error occurred while launching this game: Invalid platform". What should I try next?

How did you install Steam?

Are you trying to run games which are already installed?

Were these games installed under Windows?

Is Steam Play enabled in the Steam settings?
the proton checkbox maybe not on

Thank you for your reply!

I downloaded steam_latest.deb from the Steam Store site and ran the file. When I started Steam it downloaded and installed an update.

I have previously played these games on a Lenovo Windows 11 PC that I upgraded from Windows 10 (the games worked on both OSs).

I'll check the Steam Play setting. I haven't done that yet.

I'm not sure what you mean. Where do I find the proton checkbox?

I'm not sure where to find the Steam Play setting. When I go to Settings>Applications>Steam I don't see anything like Steam Play. Is there a setting within Steam itself I can check?

It looks like only two of my 12 games are able to be installed on Linux: Small World and Ticket to Ride. All the others, including Scythe and Terraforming Mars, have the Install button grayed out.
Look for "Enable Steam Play for all titles" setting.

Also, installing with .deb file is asking for headaches for various reasons.

Ok, so on Linux, never install programs by downloading .debs from the internet. You should install all your software through the app store. So you should remove Steam and reinstall it using the app store.

Linux does not have a proper NTFS driver, so it is not capable of handeling Windows filesystems properly. It is best to wipe the drive and reformat it with a Linux compatible filesystem such as Ext4.

The install button is greyed out because by default Steam will only allow the installation of native and Proton validated games. To play any Windows game you will have to enable Steam Play in the Steam settings.

Since you're an absolute linux noob and just want to play games, don't bother with Zorin and instead get an immmutable distro that you can't fck up that easily and has everything game related pre-installed.

Immutable is amazing, but also has lots of quirks which might confuse a new user. For new users it is best to get a normal distro, all available online documentation for generic issues is written for those.

New users shouldn't be installing anything from terminal anyway, and just use the provided flatpaks in their respective application/update manager.

Keep the terminal away from them

But i get your point
yes zorin is odd choice for first distro like slackware
pick major one like ubuntu, mint, endeavour and get used to it first

Thank you, Omega. I'll look into this when I get a chance. I'm locked into Zorin and it meets many of my needs so far. Games are a distraction for me on my Linux computer. I just thought it would be fun to have them on it as a convenience (Ticket to Ride works, and it's fun). Sure appreciate your help and patience. People like you, who are selfless with their knowledge and time, make it easier for people like me.
