a warning for storage purchasing
attention! the bright new cryptocurrency (chia) is starting to kicking in!!! BUY A HARD DRIVE (big size 4tb>) ASAP! BEFORE THEY GET TOO EXPENSIVE! you know how awful was the gpu situation just imagine that with storage too i am saying this above because i saw an WD gold 8tb going the much higher than its launch price for the first time , this was the highest price recorded from amazon's price checker

So pointing out that if they wrre honest, most wish they made more money is massively wrong, although if surveyed 99% would agree, but condemning me and those like me for mining to make some extra cash is fine.

Got it.
First of all, I am not condemning you. Notice how I said nothing about your overall stance on crypto as being wrong, or bad, or anything. I didn't even touch it. I was merely weighing in on your comment that "anyone who doesn't feel this way is lying to themself". You threw those who disagree with you into a liar basket. Reflect on who's doing the condemning here.

Lastly, you're making some rather heavy claims. I don't suppose you have sources for these claims? If not, using numbers that aren't right just weakens your argument. Regardless, even if it's true, that's not only using the "appeal to the masses" fallacy, but it's not the same thing anyway to say "99% would want more money is asked" (which is such an open ended, broad idea) as equaling "the majority feel the way I do about the specific thing since it also involves the potential to make money", so it's also using false equivalency.

Using that as your basis to call out everyone who disagrees with you as lying to themselves is why I replied, and my reply was anything but a condemnation in return.

For me money is a means to an end. I dont buy expensive cars, I dont buy designer ♥♥♥♥, I dont even by Apple devices. I buy useful things, books and tools / equipment. My latest purchase was a Rhino 5200 industrial label maker (And I love it)... yeah I'm boring.

4tb isn't really that big, now if it was 20tb now that's big

It is where I am they are already gone. 18, 14, and 10TB are all vanishing. Might be getting my wish Etheruem is already crashing. -32% So is Chia.

The larger HDDs, the 12TB+ stuff is running out here aswell following a enormous price hike around the 10th this month. Some drives doubled in price.

So 1 week and the miners caused a high capacity HDD shortage..

I mean I don't personally buy the 18TB drives because they are filled with helium due to the low viscosity requirements between the platters of the drive cylinder. But this will most certainly piss off businesses. If only there was a way to compromise the entire Chia and Etheruem network causing it to grind to halt.

Luckily SSDs seem to be unaffected.

For now, I've got a client job coming up which will require SSDs. Enterprise ones at that. On a side note: I found an interesting research paper about denial of service attack against Etheruem nodes and it actually works. Makes you wonder if a government actor could cripple it if they so chose.

Because miners are buy up the HDDs now that we've confirmed that with SOME crypto wallets, it can corrupt the life of an SSD VERY quickly. It's basically an SSD killer.

And why does a Crypto Miner need such a large drive anyways? Doesn't make much sense.
A cheap WD Black 1TB would be fine.

SSD manufacturers have also said get stuffed we aren't giving you warranty for mining on an SSD no free SSD for you. It's going to be funny as a lot of miners aren't using RAID 10 because of wanting more plotting space jokes of them when their striping arrays die. 1 drive in RAID0 bye bye the entire array.

Most the morons that are doing the Chia mining don't even know multiple nested RAID configurations. Going to be a massive lol when those with 50+ drives and 1 drive craps itself.

Yep.... I'd never mine Chia or any crypto for that matter, it is lazy. Go get another job or do something other than be a leech sucking the blood out of an already struggling supply chain.

I'm not going to lie, the concept of crypto mining is attractive to me, money for nothing (well, that would directly effect me), making a quick buck, seems great.

However, there are two things that prevent me, one I don't have the income to get a GPU that I could mine on and make a reasonable profit, and two, I wouldn't do it because of the other environmental factors (power production, chip makers, transportation of parts, waste, etc.) I don't think I would want to take part in something so damaging, given the scale mining is at, I would be 'feeding the beast', which would make more want to do it, once I spoke of my gains (provided I get some), this would exacerbate the issue.

If you want to mine, that's fine.
If you want to make money, that's fine.
I'm not envious, or jealous, I don't wish it were me doing it. I could take it or leave it.

I do wish crypto would hurry up and die out, it's causing a lot of issues right now.
Especially regarding hard drives, I need a new one, and I'm worried by the time I get the money for it, it's going to be massively increased in price.

Go find a WD Gold. Just get it, they come in 4TB by default, they have a operational time of insane hours. Sure they are a datacenter drive but when benchmarked they are faster than WD blacks anyway, and they're less noisy too.

It's not money for nothing. A single PC won't net you very much. And you're going to have to build like a $3000 PC first to even make it worth doing at all really. People trying to mine using low and mid range GPUs make me laugh. They are not netting enough to even pay for the power bills.
