I don't think they will be making another duel GPUs until the Maxwell(GM2xx) releases. If you need the upgrade, you can always do Titan Black SLI without paying the $1000 premium, or 780ti sli with 3gb vram.
Or just go with the r9 295x2
The 690 would be more my choice but it feels silly to upgrade only 1 series to the 600 when the 800 series is on it's way if you are correct.
I thought the same about the 1 series thing; but going from a 580 to 680 has a decent step when I did that. Now am running 2x 770 4GB in SLI. Improvements with each step, for sure.
