Get a Nvidia GTX 660 Ti or better for gaming on. It will give you a lot more juice.
Also why is your DDR3 memory only running at 722MHz? Check that you motherboard drivers / chipset, etc, are installed correctly. Then go under your BIOS (F2 upon startup or whatever it is for your motherboard), check the advance memory settings.
Get R9 270X or R9 280X graphics card.
You didnt list your PSU, you need 550-650W PSU with two 6+2 pin PCI-E connectors for those cards and FX-8350.
Azza how do I check that they are correctly installed?
Rumpelcrutchskin is there anyway you can check the PSU without removing the cover on my tower?
Sorry guys I know I may be asking stupid questions but I am completely new to this! :P
also I am willing to spend up to $350 (canadian) on a new graphics card. What is the best bang for my buck?

No way really checking the PSU without taking a look, check for label on the PSU or brand name, or you could ask your friend who sold it to you if you trust him.
Also need to measure the lenght of graphics card at the motherboard PCI-E slot if the card would fit. This card I linked is 11.61" long.
If you need new PSU too then R9 280 and XFX 650W PSU:

This card is same lenght.
Maybe avoid Asus with the 280x... seems to have a lot of issues after taking a look at some reviews.
Thats very good, you can use the R9 280X if you have enough room inside case for 11.61" long card.

because i don't think i have a big enough slot for that graphics card
it may squeeze in there :S
Take a measuring tape or ruler and measure if you have 11.61" free room inside case at the place of main PCI-E slot, long slot closest to CPU.
ok yeah i think i can fit it in! with the HDD cage still intact :D.
Is there anything else I would need to alter to make it a higher end gaming computer?

Not really, your horrible graphics card was holding you back. Should be no problem running pretty much any game with ultra settings on one 1920x1080 monitor with this PC and R9 280X.
Appart from horrible HD 7450 graphics card it has quite good specs, well worth $500.
Decent CPU for gaming, 16 Gb RAM, decent quality motherboard, good quality large PSU, large HDD.
