Best OS for gaming, and why?
What the title says - plead your case, I'm curious.
(This is extremely broad of a question, please consider the nuance.)

Well, its going to be windows, its just more compatible with more games than any other OS, not only that, gaming devices like wheels and software for peripherals or audio will just usually work.

Be it win 10 or 11, I prefer Windows 10, its less bloated, ui is a bit better. I find them de bloat scripts always de bloats or changes things too much and end up with problems later on so I never run them. Even though the version of Windows 10 Enterprise I have lasts until 2031, I just wanted to be up to date, especially after the Ryzen improvements.

I did run Linux on a gaming laptop, PopOS with a GTX 1650 and i5 10500h, I was surprised at how much it can play out of my library of games, but some games just wont work, or you have to go through all this crap to get it to work or some games do work but performs way worse than it did on windows.

Linux is getting there, but for less of a fight and problems, Linux in my opinion wont be the better gaming oriented operating system for compatibility sake.

I will say the same for older OS's like Windows 7, it was great during its life time, but compatibility is not there anymore obviously.

OP is asking for a "GAMING" OS, not a coding OS like linux is really used for

linux isn't a gaming os and won't be until they have support for the modern things
lol
coding OS and gaming OS.

Here is a fun fact.
All modern operating systems have good text editors with debuggers which also allow the users to add so many extensions that they can make the Windows-only "Visual Studio" to look no different. Obviously, this isn't aerospace engineering.

And talking about gaming. Is it normal for the operating system to run unnecessary bloated tasks that fill the cache needed for branch prediction?
Wait! What was the meaning of OS in the first place and why we see an extended definition of it?
dude, the bloatware is only if you buy a prebuilt that comes pre-installed with 9 million different antiviruses

plus windows is designed to have more features so its better to use

don't come complaining when you can't play any modern game with it

Windows Defender
Windows Firewall
Cortana
Co-Pilot
Windows Bitlocker
Windows Hypervisor support

All of those things listed above are bloatware in every version of Windows 11. Normal users that only game and browse the internet do not need nor want any of that.

windows defender and firewall are both security and don't take up too much performance (1% cpu usage on a really low end gaming cpu)

then cortana is windows siri, co-pilot is for ease of searching, the last two take so little performance i can't even find them on task manager

also windows 11 sucks and windows 10 is better

look at any video of someone using linux for the first time, usually ends up being "cant game, good for performance bad for gaming)

this post is about GAMING OS's, if you can't play 50% of online games, its not a gaming OS

Just check to how many IPs your PC is connecting to.
Also because Windows doesn't have the same QA as before, they fully rely on feedback and telemetry data.
Xuild 15 DIC 2024 a las 9:45 p. m.
also the post has already been answered and in a way that is very understandable, its windows 10 for the compatibility, look at any professional gamer, you will see a very very low amount of them use anything but windows

Then you don't know anything about Windows, because Microsoft literally packs it with their own bloat and telemetry which has slowed down their OS with every edition since Windows 7.

What OEMs and other companies pile on top is just extra, Windows itself is already bloated by default these days and there are programs like Atlas that are designed to remove all of that. But that comes at the cost of security as Windows Update has to be disabled, meaning you're at the mercy of the playbook maker to produce security updates for it. Modifying Windows can also potentially cause stability problems when you rip out a bunch of junk that's hardwired into the OS. Links that open Edge will also be completely broken as Edge gets disabled.

And even doing all of that, it's still not as good as Linux.

Everyone replaces them with 3rd party apps anyway. they have no real purpose other than to just use up resources for nothing.

Both Cortana and Copilot are universally unwanted by literally everyone that uses windows. No one wants them nor needs to use them.

3rd party antiviruses just screw up your computer even worse, used to use malwarebytes and it slowed down my computer so badly and always found false positives, never found a single virus

coming from someone who has used every main OS, macos, windows and linux, i stick with windows because its the most compatible

And how many of them are computer illiterate?
Anyway, but to call Linux in this case just an operating system for coding is so wrong, and to say you can't play it is stupid.
And believe it or not, you won't see me complaining. It is true that my game library is certainly a bit older than what r.linder has, but hey, it is what it is.
Steam deck also runs on Linux, so even Valve knows why to use it.

its a modified version designed to run games

also i never said you can't play anything, i said you can't play most multiplayer games since they almost all use anticheats which you can't run

Every modern Linux can play games.

These days you won't see me playing many competitive games or GTA5 Online (which with recent dlcs I find super boring)
So yeah, if any of those games are anywhere near the top of your list it means you're glued to Windows for now.

SteamOS 3.0 is just a version of Arch designed specifically for the Steam Deck hardware, everything it can do can be done on almost any version of Linux, and all versions of Arch Linux. There's nothing modified about it that makes it better for gaming than any other version of Linux, it's just made by Valve to be more streamlined so that users have a handheld device that can easily play games on their Steam library, and the software that comes with it like Gamescope is available on other distributions. It's not really anything special.

As for multiplayer game support, it's not most of them that won't outright run at all on Linux, because a ton of them just require some workarounds, and a lot of them have servers that don't use kernel-level anti-cheat software. Some of them you can still play the game but some multiplayer access may be limited.

A lot of these games ran by companies that outright blocked support are just greedy and their games aren't worth anyone's time. Wouldn't lose any sleep over not being able to play crap multiplayer games with repetitive gameplay mechanics designed to suck the feeble in and microtransactions to empty their wallets. One of these days you'll wake up and realize those games are nothing but bad for gaming in general, all those devs care about is money.

DayZ and ArmA 3 are supported... so Linux literally works with their anti-cheats, BattlEye and VAC, because the developers of those games decided to not be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like other developers that block Wine/Proton with the excuse that "it will bring cheaters" when guaranteed at least 90% of any cheat software is being run off of Windows. No, the reason has and always will be about money, the games that have a ton of microtransactions they don't want hackers cracking to avoid paying for "benefits" and pointless skins.

You might think those kinds of games (specifically ones making use of microtransactions to make money off of morons) are good, but that's merely because you don't know what you're talking about nor what's actually good for anyone. MTs should be illegal, period, they're predatory in nature and have led many idiots in the world to funnel millions upon millions of dollars to developers that use it to keep funding the train of literal feces.

are you complaining about antiviruses or complaining about microtransactions? what next are you going to complain that a game has a microtransaction for something you can get easily?
