Whys my moms laptop minecraft better then my gaming pc??
So i spend ALL my bday money over one hundred dolars on this "gaming pc" I found on facebook market place with mom and it minecrafts at like 40fps!!! But my moms old laptop (she only uses it for facebook and shopping) runs it FINE even with shaders on.

I got a AMD radeion card or sumthing, 4GB RAM (thats a lot rite?), and a cpu that says "Athlon " which i thot was the best becuz athlon sounds fancy. My friend says i need RTX but why does minecraft need like NASA computer to play block game now?!

Is this bcuz game companys r greedy or did facebook rip me off? Also my rgb keyboard lights r so bright they hurt my eyeballs. Help pls 😡
edit: thank yu my parent for new ibuypower 4090 and i9

RTX is a pointless gimmick. Just use BSL Shader.
your pc is very low end, thats why you are having performance issues.
This seems like it may be a joke, but in case you're serious...

1. A hundred dollars (usually) doesn't really go far with getting a whole PC. That being said, you did still get ripped off.

2. At this point, a PC with an Athlon anything and 4 GB of RAM is practically obsolete in a modern Windows and software environment (outside of maybe limited, low demand roles, but daily desktop use is beyond that).

3. You didn't mention what version you're playing, but presuming it's a recent one, then it's 2024 software, so running it on very aged hardware isn't always to pan out well.

Minecraft is generally CPU heavy to begin with. You can easily get get high frame rates on almost any remotely modern CPU (by "remotely modern", I actually mean at least anything within the last 20 years), but playability in that game depends not on stationary frame rates, but on how fast the CPU is to avoid stuttering during new chunk generation/loading. A CPU like the one you listed will not manage well there.

And who knows what GPU it has. AMD's older GPUs don't always do well in this game, especially if they are limited to older drivers because AMD rewrote their OpenGL stack late 2022 and the previous one didn't do as well in Minecraft.

All in all, I'm not particularly shocked at the results you're getting.

4. Your mother's laptop, if it exists and does outperform yours as you claim, is simply better if it's accomplishing that. I don't know what type of graphics card it has if it's managing shaders because those aren't necessarily light on the GPU. If it's a laptop, that sounds like something recent or higher end (or your idea of "running better" is running the lightest shaders on a low render distance at a choppy frame rate).

ok so like first of all thx for the essay but im literally 12 not like a nasa scientsit or whatever. all i no is my uncle said this pc wud “blow my mind” and instead it blew my birthday money in the trash.

second ur talking about “modern cpus” and “openGL stacks” like im sposed to understand any of that. maybe if my pc cud even open google without freezing id look it up but no guess ill just suffer. 😒

and yeah my moms laptop isnt like a gaming computer or nothing. she just uses it for minion memes on facebook but somehow it runs minecraft better than my “gaming pc”. so maybe the problem isnt me or minecraft its that facebook scammed me lol.
Sounds like you bought a really old AM3 or FM2 Athlon based PC.
That cheap sounds more like an FM2 Athlon based APU w/ Onboard Radeon = Junk.

You should have been produced proof of the full specs and then research those first before buying anything. Or you could have come here and shown us the marketplace listing and let us check it out first.

Live & Learn my dude.

very low end computer, i'd recommend buying second hand parts off of any second hand website with warranty (even if a gpu has been used for bitcoin mining, it should be fine) or maybe ask your parents to give you more birthday money

anyway, don't trust your uncle lmfao, seems like he has the knowledge of a guy that last played video games in 2010,

4GB of ram is absolutely terrible, minimum ram nowadays is like, 16GB, if you want to future proof for the future of infinite bloatware, you'd need 168 gig of ram

also, the best cpu is really anything with "x3d" at the end of it to simplify it for you

for the love of god don't get a 100 dollar "gaming" pc off of facebook marketplace, if it had decent specs it would either be a lint machine or faulty, go get your parents or someone you trust to help you build a proper gaming rig

if you do get a pc, here are some basic-ish specs to start you off with something alright

Ryzen 5 5600

RTX 3060

650W+ power supply of really any well known brand

any non spcc ssd, (DO NOT GET A HARD DRIVE, THEY ARE TERRIBLE)

b550 motherboards work good as well

if you find good discounts, you can get that rig for about 2000 aud which would be ~1300 american dollars

Basically, I was explaining that your PC has a very slow CPU (this is the primary part that computes inside the PC) and insufficient RAM, and how well Minecraft performs depends mostly on the CPU. So that explains your poor performance.

That was not worth $100. That's the type of PC someone might try and give away and have trouble finding people to want it. It's that old and slow.

A lot of PC sellers are taking advantage of buyers by taking old office PCs and outfitting them with RGB lights, a lot of RAM (like 16 GB to 32GB even) and/or a low end graphics card, just so they can say things like it has a "Core i5" or "Core i7" and a "GeForce", and then charge a big price markup on it. What they skip on telling you is that the Core i5 or Core i7 is from a decade ago, and that the GeForce (or Radeon) are also either old or low end. Because by skipping those details and listing just the brands and giving it more RAM and lights, it looks like it might just be halfway competent for gaming but at a lower price than expensive gaming PCs... but it's actually expensive for what it is.

You absolutely CAN make competent gaming PCs with old PCs... but you can't go TOO old, and you shouldn't overspend for them.

If you're young and don't get this, it's not your fault. Your uncle should have done better for you though. That's basically like a 15 to 20 year old PC, probably with a slightly less old graphics card.

since hes 12 i'd recommend him watch a few youtube tutorials on how to swap out a laptop gpu, then he'd have an alright gaming pc, he should also 100% put an extremely bad review on the guys page just to make sure

LMFAO nevermind looking at his posts previously the guys got a vac ban, clearly is a troll considering his spelling and grammar do the biggest changes ever etc

Most laptops won't allow you to change the graphics card, and even if the thread starter could do that, it's not worth it because an Athlon anything and 4 GB RAM is probably just too far gone at this point. Too many things would need replaced.

If returning it and getting their money back is possible, then that is what they should really do. Then they can consider other options.

Failing that, the uncle should step up and reimburse their nephew or niece the amount of their birthday money for this whole mishap. The phrase "over $100" makes it sound closer to $100 than to $200, so unless the uncle is absolutely broke and without an income, then they should be able to do this as a bare minimum gesture.
sounds like you got what you paid for
amd athlons are 15+ year old cpus
and it its has a radeon gpu, it might even be one of the onboard (not igpu) hd 4xxx on the mobo/sb
which were decent at the time, but nowhere near a dedicated gpu

your moms work laptop is probably only a few years old, and would be much better than the athlon desktop

Athlon
Kotlon (stovetop) - to reach the performance of the rest processors it needs to reach 200°C. (don't do it)

While I agree that $100 was never going to get anything good, they still got far less than they paid for.

Go look on eBay.

They said they spent "over $100". Not sure how much more, but that makes it sound far closer to $100 than $200, so let's say it was probably around ~$120 or $130 maybe? I'm seeing 8th generation Core i5s, 16 GB RAM, and 256 GB SSD (or 1 TB HDD) OptiPlexes all day in that exact price range.

Here's some slower and/or cheaper examples.

6th generation Core i5 (6500) with 16 GB RAM and a 1 TB HDD - $41

https://www.ebay.com/itm/315887814300

4th generation Core i7 (4770) with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB HDD - $64

https://www.ebay.com/itm/395804065159

8th generation Core i5 (8500) with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD - $80

https://www.ebay.com/itm/156537392635

Are they great? No (and I'd particularly avoid the first two since anything older than the 8th generation should no longer be bought IMO), but $100 simply only goes so far. That might only get you stuff "on the doorstep of e-waste tier" but that's still better than "actually obsolete tier" like they have.

Put the rest towards towards any old 256 GB+ SATA SSD and an cheap GPU (like a $30 GTX 1050 or so) and it'll at least be usable to some extent, for around the same price. Maybe it comes out around $150 with shipping so maybe it's a bit more than whatever "over $100" was, but still... they overpaid and badly.

Either this uncle didn't know what they were doing, or (and I hope this is just my imagination running wild) they gave their nephew or niece the cheapest thing around and pocketed the difference. Even if it wasn't malicious intent, then they chose badly because that same money can get something way, way better, so I still think the uncle should reimburse their birthday money, or otherwise buy/give them something that amount of money can truly get you.
