I have this card with 6 gig Vram plays every game I have thrown at it. Very reliable. Good GPU.
Requirements. 450 Watt or greater power supply.
Remember to check your power supply unit watts and have enough to run it.
I have 850w corsair unit and never nears full load.
Even with several external HDD camers and chargers. printers scanners etc.
The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Super is a graphics card with 6 GB of GDDR6 VRAM:
Features
Designed for 1920x1080 gaming, the GTX 1660 Super is up to 1.5x faster than the GeForce GTX 1060 6GB. It features 14 Gbps GDDR6 VRAM, which boosts peak memory bandwidth to 336 GB/s.
Specifications
The GTX 1660 Super has a memory speed of 14 Gbps, a digital max resolution of 7680x4320, and a boost clock of 1815 MHz. It has DisplayPort x 3 (V1.4) and HDMI 2.0B x 1 outputs.
If your looking to spend money on it depending on your budget it may not be a wise choice, I would be looking at nvidia 3000 series or amd equivalents as they are probably the best value pick currently.
there is only one 1660 super config, all have 6g of vram
if you have it, its ok for 1080p60 gaming, but newer games will need lowered settings and rt features turned off
Monster Hunter Wilds is pushing the envelope when it comes to system requirements and that requires a 1660 super minimum to hit that threshold. I wouldn't expect anything to be much more demanding than that until maybe the second half of 2025.
It wouldn't be a particularly bad time to upgrade though. 1080p lowest settings at 30 F.P.S. is, to put it bluntly, just barely playable and Black friday is coming up so you can probably look to get some good prices. We're also potentially looking at a new G.P.U. generation upcoming by Janurary though.
It's not just the R.A.M. The GTX 1060 3 gig. ver. also has 10% fewer cores than the 6 gig. ver.[www.techspot.com]
or mandatory needs dlss...
or needs dx 13 support
(won't all cards even the 4090 still use only dx12)
-so the ONLY realistly thing I can see happen is a game demanding 8gb vram.. but often thats a suggestion meaning with less it will lag a lot more.. not a "will not boot if it does not have that"
so for all practical means sure it works.. if it works well... that is an entire other story..
it is regardless the limited vram quite an dated card that was a budgetcard when released to start with.
most likely even at low to medium settings and 1080p you be dropping below 60fps.. and thats not what you want...
so will it work? yes.. will it be a pleasant experience no.
as there is a new generation of gpu's about to release the price of old 4060 gpu's is bound to drop... and possibly amd will release a very competivie radeon card to compete with the 5060...
that would if you want to stick to the budgetsegment be a decent upgrade path.
but even an 6650xt or 3060 would already be a solid improvement.
so basicly.. whats your budget... you certainly can easely double your performance... and if you want to run stable above 60fps at 1440p.. (basicly the new standard) you going to need more than an 1660 today..
but if you mostly play older titles anyway.. / an satisfied with 1080p and 40fps low-medium settings.. than you can I suppose still use it..
a 1660 is about 10% slower than an 980ti.. would you still use an 980ti today? no you would certainly not.
basicly..
the xx60 is the budgetcard in each generation.
and you upgrade every 2d generation.
that means anything that perfors below an 3060.. you would not use today anymore (and soon that bar will be raised to anything below an 4060
that means the only cards one would still use today are
rtx 2070 (and up)
rx 6600xt (and up)
titan rtx
and all the rx 7000 and nvidea 4000 series gpu's
-all titans that are not the rtx
-all 9xx gpus
-all 1xxx gpus
-all 16xx gpus
-all radeon 5000 series gpus
all no longer are "suited for budget gaming"
some might still be suited for RETRO gaming..
and when the 5000 series launches which happens soon that will change into
-2080 super, 2080ti or rtx titan
-rtx 3060ti or up
-rtx 6700xt or up
meaning the 2070, 2070ti and 2070 super as well as theradeon 6600xt and 6650xt are reaching end of life too..
You are not considering one important fact. People's demands vary from person to person, so therefore there does not exist a universally set minimum in terms of hardware to play games.
There is people that play games at 4K with a 4080 and have a desire for more performance and people that have a 3060 and are more than happy with their performance and purchase.
Getting the best value in this age and market is sticking with your hardware as long as you can and not making unnecessary upgrades just for the sakes of following a trend/standard of someone else. A fellow forum regular Illusion of Progress summarised it well before, the need or the demand for better hardware comes if the performance no longer satisifies you and you want more.
in the past old hardware would just 3 years after release no longer run the newer games.
*cause dx versions or shaders or other fysical new features just added up so fast the new games fysically would not boot at all on anything just a few years old.
I do think it is one sign of the decline of gaming that thats no longer the case.. it means games are to push to only run on the cutting edge hardware utilising the best they can be.. as they one did. but instead only sail as slow as the slowest ship.
but if you give rats ass about resolution and fps and settings.... than the only will really not launch at all limit would be today "does it support dx12" for games that ONLY run in dx12
which means any card 9xx series and above by nvidea
for radeon the list is a bit more hazy (due often in the same series multiple gen of cpu's being used... which means dx12 support is more model than series based) but with some cards from the r9 and r7 200 series (which excisted around the same time as the 9xx series) being the oldest that willl do.
as for windows drivers.. anything in that range still has windows 11 drivers.... but some of those cards are already dropped from nvidea game ready drivers and such.. and won't get windowws 12 drivers..
so yeah.,. as long as it supports dx12.. and has drivers for the os you want to use (you can still use windows 7 for now.. but it already needs tricks to get it to work.. like block steam from updating.. and force it forst to downgrade to the version of june this year (the last version working with win 7)
but personally 15fps at 1080p and a heck of a lot of stutters and similair stuff would I not call "a pleasant gaming experience"
so between -can run- and -can run well- is a vast difference..
and as stated for new games you can expect more like 40-50fps at 1080p low settings.
but that does not list the amount of lag.. tear and stutter... as already some games need8gb vram to run.. so with to little they will have a bad experience..
and that is if the game even supports 1080p.. for that resolution is starting to be slowly phased out... with 1440p being the new normal..
if you played old games.. with old hardware not an issue... but you are basicly asking can I use a gpu when when it was released was already quite underpowered even for a budget gpu.. (and basicly the wrong choose since the 2060 what was the actual budgetoption already excisted) 6 years after that gpu was released..
so you basicly ask something made at release to function at the bottom of the barrel to do so... 4 gpu generations further still? well nope
1080p was already a margilised option in 2016... and even budget pc's since basicly 2018 run 1440..
and most agree that anything below 60fps is "unplayable, noticable lag, tearing, etc.. " and 100+ fps is desirable..
while forced to low settings.. well just is not that pleasant... but know your card was made for low settings when it came out.. todays low settings.. may still be to much for yesterdays hardware..
it takes about 1200 euro to build a budget pc.. including montor keyboard and mouse.. just the case can be done for about 900 euro..
below that I tell people "shop 2d hand or better yet.. keep saving"
now if you convert that 900 euro.. to 3.5 year use.. and that 300 to 7 year use (presuming you use your monitor and keyboard for 2 systems..)
than that adds up to 2100 euro over 7 years... or 300 euro per year... which means just 25 euro per month.
-anybody can save 25 euro per month.
**saving up your birthday money + money you gain from an annual garagesale/mowing lawns/washing cars easely gets you to 300 a year
**a newspaper route.. easely gets you 50 a month
"**working in a supermarket gets you youthminimumwage of over 10 an hour.. hundreds a month..
and from there it only goes up.
unless you live in an absolute third world country where wages are way way way lower
you have no excuse to not go this route..
you are either a undiciplined slob with your financances.. -> being the type that wastes his money as he gets it and only starts to panic about how to replace something when it starts to break.. and not like a sensivble person start saving for the replacement as soon as they get something new..
-> or you don't see gaming as your true hobby (and thus should also)
sure I get how a student is on a budget and so is somebody on welfare...
but even those... I mean I can go outside and dive in garbadge bins.. I won't but I could.. the depositing money on each can is 15 cent.. many people not care enough and toss them in the garbadge.. just dig the bins..and bring those cans to the supermarket recycling station and get 15 cent per can.. many make 10-15 euro that way.. in just a few hours work a day.. (not nice work.. but hey if the alternative is starving??)
and most students while not upgrading their computer while on study.. do buy quite a nice pc when they start (something more powerfull than 1660)... as well they know it has to last them their entire study... and given the age of the 1660 if that was the case you must be about done with your studies... and get work income soon..
it's not a case of "go get today 1200 euro"
it's a case of.. find a way to get each month 25 euro... and set it aside.. do not use for something else..
which is totally doablle
instead of asking "should I replace this" it rather is,,. "how long did I plan to do with this"
as in you already factored in cost to replace / months you will use it = what you have set apart each month...
I do sometimes toss things that are still good... clothing is such a thing.. I am a man.. for me there is not a clear point at which that nice new boxer or shirt turns into a stained rag.. but slowly it does... so instead of doing the impossible task of every week inspecting can this still do? I opt to just toss all of it periodicly and get new.. like once a year I buy 14 pairs of socks, 14 boxers and 14 pair of underware..
other items I have other numbrs and lifespans for but same idea.
they may not always be complete worn down.. but following models like that prevents me from ever looking like a bum without having to break the bank with always having to have the latest fashion..
the few items breaking ahead of time.. clothing wise just means I have a smaller collection..
my washing machine or other devices.. sure if they break ahead of time.. time to replace
but sometimes I can use them longer.. but newer models are more energy efficient.. so replacing saves money in the long run even if they still work fine.. besides it sucks to have a broken machine and have to wait a week or two weeks for replacement and being forced to pay whatever they cost now.. and not can use a nice discount deal..
-> having more planned timings.. means I can use discounts.. when my sceduled time of replacement comes around.. I do market reseach I select models I like and than look and weait for a decent deal...
no I not pick for everything "the best there is" nor "the best I can afford"... and cause I plan anything years in advance.. I may have tens of thousands in savinds... but still feel I am 2k short.. and must "not buy anything unnneccairy.. cause those reserves are all earmarked.. and basicly I borrow from my future if I dip below them... sometimes it temporately happens but instead of the "oh I need now to fork out a huge sum cause unexpected bill.. I just use some of my savings.. consider that a debt to myself.. and pay it back as fast as I can.. but without the kind of stress people without savings have./..,
never lend, never be a lender..
I may be never rich with that mindset.. but I never will be in debt either.
My misconfigured by OS, PerApp Runtime Broker permissions were the cause of most game crashes on Win10 which I traced to Win11 but only for MS Accounts not Local Accounts (as far as I can tell).
