There is no future proofing in that, More likely that he will be worse on the efficiency scale and pay more money in electricity. Quite the opposite of what he wants to achieve.
i been using 1200w platinum for many years. peak power draw is around 650-700 on reader
thanks did not know the formula to calculate the difference. tried a few search terms and couldn't find it. granted was tired and was pass bedtime so brain only operating at 10% :P. but seriously just got too tired and gave up and made that post.
Use pcpartpicker.com or another reputable site to calculate power draw and see what you really need for a PSU (I usually add a few more things, such as more storage and others, that I think that I would add onto the system over the course of about 5-7 years and take that into account as well for calculation purposes).
I got my "Platinum" PSU because it was 20$ cheaper than gold and on sale for 60% off.
yeah no. for me to hit peak efficiency i would need 500w draw on psu. heaviest load i had before undervolting and switching to eco mode was about 460w on the ups. which still has the monitor, pc, modem, and ps4 (usually turned off) all plugged in the battery of the ups. so i'm not using that much to make 1000w even worth it for the price over an 850w. to be clear the program that my ups has to let me see what the wattage load and voltage load are track everything plugged in the battery. so i would think i'm already at that 50% threshold for efficiency. and i rarely if ever can spend more the $300 before tax on any single part.
I means whats a psu? 100 euro?
how is that an issue when you have halve a years income in savings as you should?
but as for whats the better buy... well..
1 how much does electricy cost where you live..? 40 / that price per kwh meas you need to save that much in powerdraw before the more expensive one is worth it.
3 whats your standard draw
. psus don't offer a stable efficiency but an effiency curve.. depending on % of maximum drawn.. while peak effixiency is very close betweem gold and platinum.. at very high otr very low % drawnd the gap is much greater.
if your system only draws say 400w peak and 250w most of the time the efficiency gap will be bigger.. than if 600w peak and 500w most of the time
but as a rough estimate you can presume the gold will use 2.5% more electricity than the platinum.
for an average user gold/plat/titanium will make no difference
i'm in the u.s. the reason i need to wait a month is don't really have the money to spare atm sadly. while i can get this month its going to hurt the wallet really bad. also last month spent nearly $700 usd (before taxes) fixing my pc. unfortunately wasted about $50 taking it in to a local pc shop that diagnose and repair on a 2nd diagnose. but at that point was frustrated enough that i paid them to do install of windows and update bios since originally the boot drive became corrupted. and also got the 5900xt and had them install it to make sure everything worked.
couldn't figure out what was wrong after getting back the first for the corrupted boot drive. which i didn't know could happen to storage drives. don't know how it happened but one of the vga power cables came disconnected enough to not give power between them finishing that first diagnose and me getting it back. bought a new drive and installed it my self. was getting to the point i would think about throwing the pc at the wall.
especially since i had to take it in the same day as a game i been wanting to play came out for the 1st diagnosis. and i only got it back after the 2nd time i took it in before my birthday. and i barely had the money to spare for it. so i can get it this month but only if it dies, because then i would have no choice. and i was planning to get the 5900xt originally this month or next during all the sales (most likely with new mobo too).
The AMD Chipset Driver I am interested in seeing if the "experts" installed that as well for you seeing that they installed the BIOS and these go hand-in-hand usually.
I feel you.. repairs and especially labour costs hurt badly..
you rather save that money for your next pc!
-still personally never in my life came to a point I not had savings and could not afford to replace something when it breaksm. even when still on minimumwage.. though while on minimumwahe an unespected 3000 euro dentistbill followed by a broken pc bill of 2000 .. did make me have to go into debt for a few 100dred for 1 month when when it too broke + eat very sober the next 2 months.
-good financial skills and diciplinr helps a lot
*but I also know how much worse usa is when you fall you fall so much harder and deeper.. less a safety net than here..
but ok usa has much cheaper kwh prices than the nearly 60 eu cent per kwh I pay. (only like 4 dollarcent in most usa states and lile 1.2 dollarcent in texas))
with such low rates your computer needs to consume an insane 40.000 to 135.000 kwh before the gold rated one starts getting cheaper..
that would mean using the pc for 180000 hours minimum or 20.5 years without ever turning it off.
so budgetwise go for the chesper gold rated one..
