both are rather equal although the r9 380 has a much higher tdp so overtime it will cost more on your energy bill and will require a stronger psu

or just buy a gtx 980 and don't risk ruining the graphics card but if you want more power buy a 980 and over clock it and get 990 ;)

A) There is no 990, just a GTX 980 Ti where even if you overclock the 980, you would still get 10 FPS lower.
B) There are factory overclocked 970s, So buy them and you won't need to overclock. You also won't need to worry about breaking them as their H/W is designed to be overclocked.
C) The GTX 970 costs $350 while GTX 980 costs $500. So if you think spending $150 is worth the 5~10 FPS boost, go ahead, buy it
