Soot/Cigarette smoke can build up on the cooler inside the laptop, much like dust can. This is causes the laptop to run hotter and is probably the main cause of the overheating problem.

Best way around it is to buy yourself a can of compressed air and blast out the dust etc from the vents of the PC. You shouldn't need to take it apart to do this in most cases.

Smoking puts more dirt/crap into the air. The fans on a computer pull in air to help keep the system cool and pulling in extra dirt/crap over time can cause a faster build up on compenents - which in turn can lead to heat issues.

If you don't do so on a regular basis (every few months), take a can of air, power off the laptop and blow dirt/dust out of the fans and vents. If you're not familiar with canned air; be sure to hold the can upright when using. Upside down, tilting or shaking the can cause the compressed gas to spray out in liquid form, instead of gas form.

No, but it's a filthy habit. Your home and your PC may be stained yellow or brown with nicotine. Ash from the cigarette may also end up inside your system and cause it to run hotter.

You can find them at a lot of places: Target, Walmart....pretty much any store that carries things related to PCs.

It's not criticism, it's fact.
I don't care about your way of life, but not all smokers fully realize how much it can foul up your surroundings. Now you do.

As for compressed air, I think automotive places might sell them aswell.

There is nothing you can do to protect your PCs from the filth build up.
It will actually turn into moist tobacco gunk all over the inside of a PC.
I've cleaned them out before from customers. Trust me, it never gets clean and it pre-maturely will kill your fans for sure. Even all filters Desktop PCs, the filters will build up so bad that all your PC will eventually due is churn hot air cause the filters get totally caked up.

Best bet is take breaks from your PC and go outside to smoke if it is something such as tobacco. Now vaping of course is fine.

I'll be honest I can't imagine cig smoke would reach a sufficient density to directly affect the running of a laptop and cause an overheat. The intakes and exhausts prob just need blowing out, the TIM might also be getting a bit dry.

Your post is spot on.

Reminds me of a PC that I once worked on... outside was sticky... inside was covered with this thick, tar-like substance. The guy smoked while on his PC for years... almost gave it back to him without fixing it/cleaning it.

And here I am cig free and vaping (heavily) for the last 4-5 years... and my computers and other electronics seem cleaner... heh, go figure.

Seriously, I about vomited when I found out how disgusting my car got after only having it for just short of a year at the time.

Beer goggles.. but for smoking? Something like that.

It builds up rather fast.

My classic smells delicious. Like smoke and sweet mold.
