its around the same performance as the i5-4460 but maybe a bit better because its an i7 which means 8 threads.
take all this with a grain of salt because again, i dont know mucha bout the whole socket thing
first question- do you plan on overclocking?
this changes a lot because if youre like me and cant overclock for one reason or another theres no point in getting a more expensive "k" model.
2nd question- are you willing to buy used? like on ebay or amazon used, whatever.
also please send your motherboard model or just info page.
also my board is the ASUS P8B75-M/CSM
My suggestion would be an i5 2400, 3450 or 3470 but if you can find an i7 2600 or 3770 cheap that would also be a good choice.
i7-3770 (slightly over $200)
i5-3570
i7-2600
i7-2700
i suggest the 2600 as thats what i got, and its very good for the price. got mine for $178. and its sandy bridge so no bios update needed
i7-2600 and i7-3770 are VERY close in performnce, like negligibly close, but the 2600 is like $50 cheaper on average.
There's also the oem ^ xeon 1230 V2 4c/8t 3.3ghz $222, you'll need a hsf with it.

also, use cpuboss.com or other sites like gamedebate to compare processors.
heres that xeon vs the i7-2600 for example. http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Xeon-E3-1230-v2-vs-Intel-Core-i7-2600
Just for reference ^ even the i5 3470 is still going strong. just do your research and buy what you feel comfortable with.

Another reference tool ^.
that is true, but those benchmarks were taken with the 980ti. i doubt the OP has a gpu as good as this. that being said those numbers are still good for comparing. plus he can upgrade to that gpu anyway.
It's not so much about the 980ti it's how the cpu will perform with one of the strongest cards and the future potential of not being held back by the cpu in a significant way.
