But personally i'd go for the 960.
That is, if you care about such things in some games. Which I do.
I wouldnt go below a 970 FTW+ ACX2.0 these days but if you can afford an extra 120 then definitely go for a 980.
It runs cooler and uses less power... So factor that into your comparison considerations.

As you can see there is little difference in terms of temps and even power consumption for that matter.
Heat shouldn't really be a problem if you pick a case with good airflow (at least 2-3 fans) and a good GPU sub vendor who uses a good cooler, for example Asus with their Strix coolers.
How long a GPU lasts will depend on how well used it is and how well maintained it is. Keep it clean and in a well ventilated case and you'll get many years out of it. This applies for any GPU you buy, regardless of brand.
The whole story about the burning out motherboard thing was probably that Crimson driver bug that occured a few weeks back. Only a few people burnt out their cards and the bug was fixed within days. Again driver bug issues can occur with both AMD and Nvidia hardware, its an unavoidable thing that happens from time to time on both sides.

Actual card temps boils down to ambient and actual cooler used ie a 380x myst ^ can score lower temps than a gtx960 simply because of the gpu cooler used.
The "old" ati and NVidia cards both had their problems but it's the cusp of 2016 now so it's irrelevant.
Ps, the gtx970 is a better start point if you can afford it, if not, then the 380x/380 are next down on the list.
