You won't need a BIOS update, you'll need a motherboard upgrade. Those two CPUs are of different socket types, a 3770 would not fit in your current motherboard.

the CPU is a FCLGA 1155 and the motherboard is LGA 1155. not sure if they will work together.

but some sites do suggest that it will work on the motherboard.

you would have to find a bios update availible for the motherboard, you usually burn the update to a disk and then start the computer with the disk in and boot from the disk, it will then wipe the old bios and put the new one in (this will reset the bios to defaults).

make sure that you do not shut the computer off or do anything during the process, becauase it can totally brick your motherboard.

You should be able to use:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

If you don't know your model number, then try the automatic search (requires plugin download).

you might be able to find a bios update if you google the computer model, then find the manufacturers website and they should have a bios update in the downloads/support section.

i think your going to have to contact HP support and see if they can direct you to a bios update, might be worth asking if the CPU is compatable with the motherboard aswell. couldn't find any mention of a bios update for the computer model or the motherboard model online.

ive decided to just get the sandy bridge 2600. not much difference in performance, cheaper, and less problems.

Still helps to update the BIOS to the latest one; as it may address various issues the board might have.

Just go to HP.com/Support and input your system model there to gain access to Drivers & Support; such as Driver downloads and BIOS updates.

Here is the page for your system: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-p7-1400-desktop-pc-series/5295962/drivers

Look on the sticker on your HP case to better identify it; either pavilion p7-1400t or P7-1440z

Which model of pavilion p7-1400 exactly do u have? U never confirmed this.
There are BIOS updates for ones like P7-1400T but to find that I had to click Windows 8 in the download section. Again please confirm your full system model before attempting any BIOS update. Since you have OEM PreBuild you go by the full model # of your system; not the Motherboard Model listed in CPU-Z for example.
