GPU memory clock won't go down at idle [SOLVED]
Last month I upgraded from an EVGA GTX 660 SC to a Zotac GTX 970. I use MSI Afterburner to monitor my temperatures and whatnot. Lately I've noticed that sometimes after gaming my idle graphs are stuck at high. Usually when I'm done playing I leave my PC idle for temperatures to settle down, but it's been stuck at high. It feels pretty random. When I played Metro 2033 for a few minutes, everything seemed fine afterwards. Just by launching Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed, my idle temps get stuck at high. Today, I tested Ziggurat. Playing it for the first time and then exiting the game gave me no issues. But the second time around my issue came back. This problem only occurs after gaming, and it's kind of random at that. If I don't play anything and just browse the web, my idle graphs are normal. The only way to get back my normal idle temperature is to restart the damn computer.

I've googled for an answer for hours and I can only find users who share this issue that own a higher refresh rate monitor. I've tried doing a clean install of the latest nvidia drivers, uninstalling Geforce Experience, reinstalling afterburner, running virus and malware scans, and even reattaching and dusting my video card. Nothing seemed to work, and I'm getting very frustrated.

i7 3770 @ 3.4 GHz

12 GB RAM

460W PSU

Windows 7 Home Premium

Dell 1920X1080 monitor at 60 Hz

Solution: Dell Display Manager was the culprit! I had to exit the program to get back to 2D clocks. I then unintalled it.

I currently am. I don't see anything different. Client Server Runtime Process is still the only process that doesn't have a blank in the GPU column. I'm gonna try out Sonic Racing. Last time I tested that game, I didn't even have to play it. Just launching the program gave me the issue.

I gotta be honest too. The squeaking noise and temp spike didn't happened "immediately" after. More like a minute or two after I ended the game.

Well, I'm guessing that I could be WinSat. According to this thread, the task occurs at Sunday 1 AM. That was pretty much the time when it happened here.

This is apart from the idling problem that I have.

You're giving me a headache at this point, seriously. :P

Haha. The task just spooked me and I overreacted. I thought my problem became much bigger.

Alright, gonna try out the next game and see if something pops up in process explorer.

The idling issue is certainly back, but I don't find anything odd in process explorer. What should I look for again?

Any kind of excessive load.

From the GPU column correct? I don't find anything that's using up my gpu excessively.

Then it's likely just a misconfiguration on you end.
Properly (!) reset the nvidia driver, and get rid of 3rd party tools. Maybe you screwed something up in MSI Afterburner that keeps the clock at high, maybe in the nividia panel, or even just Windows set to maximum performance, stuff like that.

I have the power mode in the Nvidia Control Panel Set to Adaptive. I reinstalled my GPU drivers with everything except Geforce Experience. I checked my PC's power settings and I have it at Balanced. I have been suspecting MSI Afterburner, but yesterday when I tested Sonic Racing I had that disabled. I checked the temperature using Speccy and it was hitting above 40C at idle when It's suppose to be at least 30C.

I only use MSI Afterburner to watch my temperatures and framerate when I play games. I've never touched the overclock or fan curve settings. I only use the on screen display tab.

What do you mean by reset the nvidia driver? Do you mean to roll back to an older driver?
just.kamk /idle 27 DIC 2015 a las 12:33
I mean a clean (!) uninstall of it - google it.

Now you talk about idle temperatures, which is something else than clock speed.

We / i can only give you suggestions based on what you're telling us. You still have to follow through with them, or we constantly run in circles. Like uninstalling MSI Afterburner and doing a restart.
Sweet C 27 DIC 2015 a las 12:51
Oh, a clean uninstall! I've done that a lot ever since I noticed this issue. I use Display Driver Uninstaller.

I'm sorry to sound rude, but I talked about my idle temperatures in my original post. I even have two links of pictures that you can compare. Usually when my GPU is idle it's at 12% power usage, 27-30C, and the memory clock is around 324 MHz.

When, for example, I launch Sonic Racing, (because with this program I don't even have to play the game. Launching it brings up the results), and I close the program, my power usage at idle increases to 45%, temperatures stay above 40C (42-45C), and my memory clock gets stuck at above 3506 MHz.

I'm going to do a clean uninstall again. I feel that I should try to only install the driver , physx, and nothing else (3D sterescopic, HDMI audio, etc). And I'll again completely uninstall MSI Afterburner and Rivatuner. I'll let you know when I'm done.
Sweet C 27 DIC 2015 a las 13:54
Alright, I uninstalled Afterburner and did a clean install of my Nvidia driver. Only difference is that I installed a driver that's a bit older (358.91).

What do I do now? I feel like the next step is to try Sonic Racing again and see if I still get this issue.
Sweet C 27 DIC 2015 a las 14:08
Sigh. I still get this issue. I'm gonna have to try out my old GTX 660 and see if it's the actualy video card at fault.

Of course -_-

I think that this is little mining script... And was written very bad.make just clean install of the os,load directly from bios on uefi, after install do not open nothing else only C drive make a administration account with password and use different account for daily work. The only problem for that multiple accounts is that every time you install or delete a program, you have to enter the password. After that check for problems with anti-virus, malware etc...My friend has same problem with his notebook and the problem was mining script in one of his non original software program wich has been recently installed...
