AMD R9 290X OR R9 390X
Hello i need some advice i will be getting a MSI GS30 Shadow and will be getting a 8GB GPU and i was wondering if I should get the AMD R9 290X OR 390X

The 290X is $100 less but uses 375w of power but the 390X only 275w and i'll be worknig with only 425w supply for GPU. The CPU has it's own power supply so it's not an issue.

So which one would you all recommed i get?

The 390X is a little better than the 290X. It is the same chip, but simply tweaked a bit for slightly better performance.

Here is the performance difference.

Ok thanks 390X it is

That's the 4GB R9 290X though I'm pretty sure, not one of the custom 8GB models which may perform better when more than 4GB of graphics RAM is called for because the 4GB would have to share system RAM and onboard RAM is faster.

Also it seems to me that there is only a $20~ difference in price between the 8GB version of the R9 290X and the standard 8GB R9 390X as seen here:
http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/video-card/#r=8192&sort=a8&page=1&c=146,312

R9 290X 8GB version is the cheapest at $355~ while the cheapest R9 390X 8GB costs only $375~. Since it's not a huge difference I'd say get the R9 390X, it's 5% faster as per factory set clockspeeds and there might be other slight advantages or updates that it has been tweaked with as well. So go ahead and get the official 8GB R9 390X instead of the customized R9 290X with the extra 4GB to make it 8GB also. It's only $20.

If these prices aren't the same or cheaper than what you found please let me see what you are looking at and provide a link. I mean if you can get a 8GB R9 290X for $275~ then get that.

Vram does not work like that.

It will only help if vram is hindering performance. And there is only a few situations where the 4GB will be the limiting factor.

If the OP was wanting to do something over 1080p, I would not recommend either of the cards anyways.

970 however u can use a quality 500-550 watts PSU
For 390/390X please ensure a quality 600-watts minimum PSU

Ok thanks

Keep in mind your CPU's TDP. For example if u have a high TDP CPU such as AMD FX-8 series; then u will want a higher Power Supply for such high end AMD GPUs; where as with a lower TDP CPU like Intel i5 or i7 on the 1150 or 1151 platforms; those are much lower TDP and thus a much higher wattage PSU most likely wouldn't be needed.

The cpu isn't a problem it has it's own dedicated power supply but thanks anyway

What u mean by that? You running Two PSUs?
DIGITALDRIFT 23 DIC 2015 a las 20:03
Yes it's the MSI GS30

PSU = Power Supply Unit
This is what powers the entire system and must provide enough power for all hardware.
I think u mis-understood.
DIGITALDRIFT 23 DIC 2015 a las 20:08
Ok the msi gs30 is laptop with a gaming dock via PCI-E 3.0 the laptop has it's own power supply but also the dock has one too so yea two power supplys
DIGITALDRIFT 23 DIC 2015 a las 20:10
It amazes that it can do that
Beardface31 23 DIC 2015 a las 20:24
