2x140 vs 3x120 for top exhaust fans on Montech King 95 Pro?
Made a a build for a friend [pcpartpicker.com] and was wondering if I should use the default fan configuration or go for extra top exhaust fans and if I should do I go for 2x140 or 3x120mm

140mm fans can be quieter and move more air when spinning slower

but it really depends on the fans
but they do that to make it more compatible with more clc and rads

3x120mm No doubt.
Unless you get CFM that is 50% or 100% higher from the 2x140mm.
Fans are measured in CFM, cubic feet per minute, how much air they can move.
Compare CFM between the 3x120mm, not all are equal, and PC Part Picker has limited options.

Let's do a little simple math for you:
2x140 = 280
3x120 = 360

It should be pretty obvious that 3x120 is going to offer better airflow and as a result better cooling performance. It's a larger passage for air to pass through.

its not about the size
its about the airflow
take the 120mm cfm x3, vs 140mm cfm x2

if you use 3x 120mm 40cfm fans, = 120cfm
or 2x 140mm 60cfm = 120cfm
its the same airflow either way

so it depends on the fans used not just the size

Likely 3x120. Also consider the areas covered and airflow. Probably won't make much difference.

And yet again you just embarrassed yourself in public, GOOD JOB! You seem to be fond of doing that with technical information in the steam forums. I have no idea why.

It most definitely is about the size. There are high airflow fans for both 120mm and 140mm, the CFM rate has nothing at all to do with this thread or the question. You could get a higher CFM rating with 3x120 or a higher CFM rating (total) with 2x140, that's irrelevant.

As I said above: Using 3 x 120mm fans has a larger physical space (think of the "hole" the fans occupy) vs 2 x 140.

exactly what have i said that was wrong?
3x 40 = 2x 60, is that not correct?

fans moving area is round, not square
and the fans motor takes up part of the middle of the fan

if you use 2x 240mm with 100+cfm, it will be more airflow than 3x 120mm fans with 60 cfm

its not the size of the hole, but the airflow moving through it

the case is designed to fit either a 360mm or 280mm rad, thats why it has options to fit 120 or 140mm fans

There are 120mm fans rated for 175 CFM that they could use and with 3 of them end up at 525 CFM total. Likewise there are also 140 MM Fans rated for 262 CFM that could be combined to come up with 524 CFM total. The physical dimensions of the fans and their configuration has absolutely nothing at all to do with this thread or this discussion. That's the wrong thing to focus on here.

The total airflow can be exactly the same in either configuration option so the only other possible variable to consider is the size of the hole.

You have now twice demonstrated your complete lack of any understanding with anything technical in this thread. :steamfacepalm:

Why are you even here commenting if you know that you don't understand subjects like this?

again, t depends on the fans the op has available and what he wants to use

higher cfm smaller fans are noisy
if he wants quiet, 140mm fans would be the way to go
i too have some 200+cfm 120mm case fans, but i dont use them at full speed since they make so much noise
limiting them to around 30% keeps them quiet

as long as the fan spots are filled and set to cpu/mobo temp control its good enough for most configs
if they are running noisy, or the case is hot then get better fans

Again, for the 3rd time: The OP didn't ask about airflow at all. No one in this thread was discussing airflow before you came in here and started talking about that. Airflow has nothing to do with this thread. You are completely off topic.

i told my friend to get the 3x120mm case fans from thermalright. Just wanted to know which configuration would be the best to exhaust out heat quick and efficient thats all

if its not about airflow, just block them off or dont use any fans
SlowClick Jul 13, 2024 @ 4:59am
Actually the OP asked if they need extra fans or not. The case they have listed has 6 fans preinstalled.

I wouldn't add more fans. In some cases it can even make cooling worse when it changes air flow in a wrong way. 1 Exhaust for positive air pressure is fine. The top space is mostly for an AIO.

If you go back and read the original first post in this thread they just asked if they should use extra fans or not. They didn't ask about airflow. No one asked about airflow. You've been talking to yourself this entire time over something that no one cares about but you.

But you commonly do this in the steam forums so.. I guess you're used to talking to yourself. *shrug*
