Computer shutdowns only while gaming, not stress testing
Allo,

I'm having a problem, and it's making me nuts. When playing Baldur's Gate 3, and Once Human, (The only two that have caused it thus far) my computer will randomly shut down. Not crash, just turn off. I can play other games just fine so far, Kingdom Hearts 3 (On Epic), Rabi-Ribi, Sea of Stars, Palia, etc. without issue.

I've run all manner of stress tests (OCCT, all tests, some repeatedly; Prime95, Furmark, MemTest64) on the entire system, as a whole and individual components, and nothing happens. It just passes the tests.

I've been monitoring the temps, and while they're warmer than I'd like, there's nothing alarming (Not much I can do about it, it's a physical problem with the space the computer is in and the layout of the apartment, there's a bit of recirculation, but it's still well within limits)

When nothing was showing any defects, I sort of defaulted to the PSU. I got a new one, and the issue persists.

I've reloaded Windows as well, and that did nothing. My next step is to clear the CMOS, but I just keep forgetting to do it when it's a good time.

Specs:

Ryzen 7800x3D
Gigabyte X670 Aourus Elite AX
BeQuiet Straight Power 1200W PSU (Single rail) (Old one was BeQuiet Dark Power Pro 11 1000W)
64GB Corsair Vengeance DDR5
RTX 4090
Various NVMe drives and SSDs

I'm at my wit's end at this point. I can just start buying new components, but I'd rather just find out what's happening and fix it. Has anyone had this issue before? Was there a resolution?

he may need higher gauge wires.

You never change a PSU without changing the cables. That's just common sense.
I never change a PSU without first establishing it's the problem... seems like common sense to me :S

While true it helps to just have an extra known working and stable PSU already on-hand so you can test for that. If swapping out the PSU and modular psu cables doesn't solve such problems then it's most likely something else, such as the Motherboard or even the BIOS settings

my first step would be to check event viewer.

Heheh, the only other working power supplies I had are AT.

Could be PSU/GPU issue. Had an old build that I bought from a friend. PSU would have issues and cause kernel power failure. Look at your windows log entries after the event. Should give you an idea if you have a software, driver, or hardware issue.

With all the faulty RTX 40 on the market, it wouldn't surprise me if it's the GPU. Or the NVIDIA Control Panel settings. Some games are quite unstable without making some changes in NVIDIA Control Panel

I think your computer might be racist :S

really tho, have you checked windows errors? it should keep some logs even in the case of a catastrophic crash...
good lord man.

gotta check windows event viewer logs to see what its spitting out on shutdown.

:steamfacepalm::steamthumbsdown: nvida tunes those settings themselves and they are for your gpu type. they push updates to them even when you don't know it.

wow, and exactly how is this done?

nvidia does not tune anything at all even from the gpu mfg
the gpu mfg bins the gpu cores they get from nvidia for oc or vanilla models

the nvidia employee Marcos has told me directly.
all settings in cp are pushed by them after an update happens to your drivers. and its remote.

Note
CPU and motherboard checks out,

RAM 2 piece is excessive, if 4 was not designed for. Check for xmp for bios?

Storage is all 8 connections?

CPU integrated graphics being used?

Power Supply Optimal.

GPU??? That thing is a beast is it liquid cooled?

In experience of such a shutdown would only be able to say a ram and northbridge overheat would cause a shutdown as you describe at this time.

8 storage connections 2 ram slots beast of a gpu keyboard mouse headset speakers breaks pci lane.

1 he said hes getting power loss int he logs.
2. these gpus run really cool no need for one unless you seem to want a meager overclock.
and 3
"The NB overheat can t shut down the PC"
