Monitor suddenly turns off with "no signal" if gaming
Hi.

I was playing a game, and suddenly the screen turned itself off mid game and reported "no signal".
I restarted the PC (as it was the only way to get the screen to switch on again), tried to launch the game again, and as soon as 3D was involved it turned off again (with no response to any button input). I then tried to run the game via the TV, but same thing happened.
So I uninstalled the driver using DDU, reinstalled the driver and then stress tested the GPU via OCCT - all tests passed without errors.
I then relaunched the game, and it seemed to work, but after a couple of minutes, the screen turned itself off again (reporting "no DP signal" as it was shutting down).
I made sure the graphics card power connectors were firmly connected, but it didn't make a difference.
Could it really be that the graphics card is already dead? I'm using an RTX 3080, so I wouldn't expect it to be at end of life this early (it's probably less than 3 years old); the TV isn't ancient either (and only used rarely), and the monitor is brand new (maybe 1 month old).
Any advice what I could do to further diagnose/solve this problem would be highly appreciated.
My full specs are in my profile bio.

Thanks in advance.

PS1: A problem I have had for a while (long before this no signal issue started) is that the computer won't switch to the DP monitor during boot, it only provides signal via HDMI until Windows is started (only once the Login screen appears does the monitor receive signal via DP).
PS2: I found this, but I'm unsure whether to use it as it doesn't mention the 3080, only the 3080Ti:

that is incorrect. drivers is required to run at frequencies higher than 60 hz starting with windows 8.1. i actually tested it. my toshiba laptop, which normally runs at 120 hz on a 144 hz monitor have its drivers installed for that monitor but, if i try to connect it to another monitor that it does not have drivers for, it is limited to 60 hz. that same monitor runs in 144 hz on a pc that have drivers for it. they made it a bit easier in windows 10 however, by providing drivers through windows update. though when i installed those drivers on my acer laptop it went to black and white. my toshiba laptop have an upper frequency limit of 120 hz and can not run faster even if the monitor supports it. all of my monitors supports 144 hz.

where is the driver?
only manual and warranty pdf, no diver is ever needed for a display
even 9x did not need one
3.1 needed gpu drivers

Most desktop monitors don't need drivers and can connect via HDMI or DisplayPort

LOL.. you're really funny. I have 3 monitors on my computer. All 3 are 1080p and 144hz. I've installed all of them connected to my windows 11 computer and I never installed "monitor drivers". They all just work without "monitor drivers". I also sometimes dual boot into Windows 7 64-bit with these monitors and this computer and they work in Windows 7 also without ever loading any monitor drivers. In fact the manufacturers for my monitors don't even provide drivers for them. Does not exist. Can not download them.

They all work at 144hz without drivers. As I said: Monitors don't use drivers anymore. I also have windows update permanently disabled on all windows installs from the first time I install it (never let it run, never let it download or install anything, even windows 11). My computer isn't pulling down drivers from windows update either.

That limitation you're referring to is your laptop's hardware limiting what connected monitors can do. It's not a lack of drivers.

then windows have likely installed monitor drivers. but i know that you are just a troll so, i will not respond to you anymore.

just windows generic vga driver is all that is ever needed

you can install a driver if the display has some other features, usb or other stuff but its never necessary for it to work as a standalone display

Windows uses generic monitor drivers inside of it, yes. But that is all that is required to make monitors work. No one ever needs vendor specific video drivers to make anything work.

I have a suggestion for you: Pick any 100hz or faster monitor for sale new then go to that company's website and find the support section for that exact model. Then try to find a download for drivers for that monitor.

You won't find it. No company or manufacturer provides drivers for any monitor today. Literally no one. Does not exist. Can not download it, can not install it, can't get it. All because it's not necessary anymore just like I tried to tell you.

That's your Lenovo laptop limiting what you can do with monitors. If you connected all of those monitors to a normal desktop computer you wouldn't have those limitations.

for many higher refresh display resolutions, you need to select pc res section not tv/hd section
then it will let you select 90+hz refresh rate

tv defaults are 29.97-30-59.94-60hz

I've been thinking and I think I know what your problem is. It's the video card in your laptop has problems. Because my mother is using an older laptop with an old Nvidia K3000 GPU in it and it doesn't support external monitors above 60hz, just like what you complained about. It's nothing to do with drivers. It's just the video card can't do it.
my laptop does run in 120 hz with drivers on my asus manitor and its own internal monitor. on my aoc monitor, that it does not have drivers for it runs at 60 hz.

Could you tell us exactly which model monitor you are referring to for your "AOC monitor" ?

Well you won't tell us the model so I'll go ahead and tell you why I asked: I own a 27" AOC monitor that can do 1080p @ 144hz. But only if it is connected by Displayport. If I connect it over HDMI it's limited to 1080p @ 60hz. It has nothing to do with drivers, it's just a limitation of the monitor. I'm guessing here (since you won't tell us which monitor you have) but yours probably does something similar. And I'm guessing you're trying to connect it over HDMI to your Lenovo laptop and that probably is your problem.

here is the thing: hdmi cables comes in different speeds. a slow hdmi cable can only handle 60 hz, while a fast one goes higher. i ended up haaving to buy an extra cable, because i got the wrong one the first time. elkjøp is also determined not to sell the high speed cables and will only recommend the slow speed ones. if i want high speed cables i have to find them on my own, as the staff refuse to help.

It has nothing at all to do with the cable, how fast or slow it is, or drivers. It is literally the monitor it's self that has limitations. This can not be changed. It's just how AOC designs their monitors. I would suggest you look up the exact model number of the AOC monitor you have, go to the AOC website, download the manual, and scroll down near the bottom to look at supported display resolutions and refresh rates depending on the connection type. I would be happy to do it for you but you did not tell me the monitor model number so I can not do it for you.

If your monitor only supports 1920x1080 @ 100+ Hz over displayport then you must use displayport. And before you think about it: No you can not use a displayport to hdmi adapter on the monitor side and connect it to an hdmi port on your laptop and get full refresh rate that way either. Doesn't work. Must be a direct displayport connection from the monitor to a displayport port on either your laptop or a desktop video card. If your laptop doesn't have a displayport port (hdmi only) then you don't get to use that monitor at full refresh rate on that laptop.

AOC does this with a lot of their high refresh rate screens. They also do not distribute drivers for their monitors so that won't change anything either.

The PC usually starts, and I can leave it running for ages with video playing, but strangely when I start a game, after a while the monitor just goes out and won't come back on no matter what I do.
I just played a game with video running in background, yet when the monitor cut out during gaming, the sound of the video was still audible (usually, if the entire graphics card crashes and the video driver fails as a result, shouldn't the video stop as well?)
Ever since the issue appears, the PC also won't start sometimes, indicating a VGA problem (white light on MB).
I just disabled resizable BAR, but that didn't change anything (the problem still occurred).
I do have drivers installed for the display, which came with the ASUS DisplayWidget. But that never caused issues before, even when I actively used the Widget (which I now rarely do - it lets you change various screen properties).
I think it's a hardware problem, as the system always starts up with a POST message indicating instability (once I press CTRL+ALT+DEL, the system then restarts & boots into Windows).
The system now detects the display at start-up/during POST/Loading Screen, the problem with losing signal only ever happens in 3D applications (reproduced in Vulkan, DX10 and DX12).
One day I could play RDR2 and AC Mirage for hours without issues, the next day Medal of Honor 2010 crashed after 10 minutes.
I suspect a hardware issue, either with the PSU, the Mainboard (as that's by far the oldest part in my PC), or the Graphics Card itself. Or possibly a combination thereof. Since I tried everything I could think of, my plan is to buy a new MB to see if that solves any of the problems, and then send in whatever else isn't working.
Unless you guys have any more suggestions... Thanks in advance.

I'm not using a laptop, I'm using a PC. Also, the video card supported both the 165Hz monitor just as fine as the 60Hz TV. It's a problem that suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
