Just keep using Win10, what's the problem.

If you get a new PC then just install Linux.

Microsoft is bringing back "Recall" in Windows 11 in October. It saves a screenshot of your desktop every few seconds to make it easier for hackers to get your money. Download Linux Mint instead, its free. Has no AI in it.

Your machine could still last another 5+ years if you install Linux instead.

Don't believe the 'horror stories' about Windows11 - it's perfectly ok. The only ppl that don't like it are those that are paranoid about 'telemetry' and 'date collection' or 'bloat' - none of which cause a problem for ordinary casual users like me and you.

My Win11 PC has not skipped a beat since new - about 18 months now. I get all the updates etc without any issues.

Crow bars rule, OK?

:steamfacepalm: This is exactly why corporations like Microsoft can get away with things outside of the EU, people being dismissive and choosing to remain blind to the truth.

Telemetry is data collection, specifically executed remotely for the purpose of monitoring, Microsoft uses a lot of it with their more recent versions of Windows and they apply more and more of it with each version, which adds to a lot of the changes in system requirements as it bloats the OS and takes up more CPU, RAM etc. to keep all of that junk running, it directly affects performance so it affects everyone that uses the OS without modifications.

Linux can very easily perform better while using less system resources, and distros like Mint that are focused more on stability rarely ever have serious problems.

If you are buying or building something new I'd go with Win 11 Pro. I've been using it now for over a year and it's been rock-solid, the only change I made was put the taskbar to the left.
Gaming, streaming, photo editing etc it handles it all with ease.
I wish you Best of luck.

You may not realise that getting a hold on a legit windows 10 can be difficult these days, I see keys going cheap but i don't trust them.

I don't think we can stop spying into users PC's, Heck did you know the CCTV cameras all around town watch and record you for any reason desired? They say it's for our "protection".

I mean the obvious thing to do is install linux. Half-life has native linux support, and there's a mod for half life 2 called Half-Life 2 update which just straight up adds linux support.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/290930/HalfLife_2_Update/

Not that you need it since Half-Life 2 also works with Proton. Just tried it with the demo. Why wouldn't it? It's a Valve game. They probably built proton in part against it. I hear modding on linux can be somewhat of a pain. I don't mod so I wouldn't know for myself.

It may just work though: Here's a guide regarding how to run Half-Life mods on linux.

Might not be as easy with Half-Life 2, since this person experienced problems but at least some of the mods seem to work. Entropy: Zero 2[www.gamingonlinux.com], and Synergy[www.gamersonlinux.com] at least.

However, with that having been said, you should also give consideration to just how much computers have advanced over the years. I think it's actually a bit foolish to keep using that old X.P.S. The processor has a 95 watt T.D.P. for relatively little compute power, and I don't reckon a Radeon HD 6450 which may have come with it is very powerful either. It's not even as powerful as U.H.D. 600 graphics.

The N100 has a T.D.P. of just 6 watts and I think that includes the I.G.P.U. We're looking at a fire strike score of 340 for the HD 6450, and a fire strike score of 3891 for the U.H.D. Graphics 64eUs used in alder lake[technical.city].

As you might come to imagine, a 95 watt processor with a 30 watt graphics card may be taking its toll on your electric bill.

It might not happen quickly, but an N100 mini P.C. is going to save you money on your electric bill and open up more options for gaming at a relatively cheap price. Granted, you can't expect miracles out of it You can't even really expect it to run Genshin at a stable 30 F.P.S. But you can put it in your pocket and it'll pay itself off over time, esp. if you end up using it for another eleven years, and you'll have something pocketable to hook up to a hotel room television.

Maybe I could understand using the older computer if this was more of a Pentium/D.O.S. type situation, but my understanding is that modern Windows is still fundamentally built upon the same software as XP, just with more bells and whistles. That isn't to say there's perfect compatibility with XP era stuff, but that doesn't even matter since you're only interested in half-life.

Which one should you get?

Well, I'd say this gmktech mini P.C.[www.amazon.com] The N100 is limited to single channel R.A.M. and D.D.R. 5 makes up for that somehow.

I don't fully understand it, but this person explains it as there being no such thing as single channel D.D.R. 5. I am not sure what that means, but if I had to guess, I would suppose it has something to do with D.D.R. 5 having two buses that support 32 data bits, instead of a single 64 bit wide bus.[www.rambus.com] Faster R.A.M. is also better for the I.G.P.U. since it's shared.

It's only 12 gigs., but I don't especially anticipate you'll be needing more than that if Half-Life 2 is your highest speced. game. I'm somewhat doubtful you even have twelve gigs. in your system right now. Looks like that system[www.cnet.com] only came with 8, and even counting the V.R.A.M. you only have a total of 9.

Granted, you can load the XPS 8300 with up to 32 gigabytes of R.A.M., but I think somebody who might have done that would have likely bought a new computer by now.

What horror stories? Most videos on the subject are years out of date. Windows 11 is just fine. The only thing is you have to spend an afternoon removing the bloatware that comes with it.

I'd be curious to see real world performance stats before and after 'de-bloating'.

windows 11 in the 23h2 state is fine in a way just there is a lot of telemetry ♥♥♥♥ what ruffles my feathers is that recall which is a security vulnerability which a os should never actively add vulnerabilities to your system and their goal is to eventually get rid of local accounts so your out of luck if you do not have internet you cant use your pc

i also have troubleshooted pc's with microsoft accounts and fk me i want to strangle microsoft the process of getting in the pc is a nightmare for repair but but that is a good thing? you basically traded in physical access to get into your pc to online access to get into your pc and in both instances once you are logged in no hacker needs to bypass your credentials

the only real reason microsoft wants you to use a account is tracking and information gathering there is no benefit for the user in fact by making it online they increased the vector of chance of being targeted because they can do everything remotely and even attack microsoft themself for massive account leaks

this isn't some paranoia i actively saw someone remove my emails on 2 emails i closed because of being compromised they just piggybacked onto the login token and i still question to this day when and where it happened because i do not visit any site i do not know unless its a in a vm which does not have my credentials

and then the last one why microsoft why do you link the pc account to the email account all ♥♥♥♥ aside if the account system actually made it safer then it wouldn't be such a big deal if you just did not link the emailing service together

this causes 2 problems

1. if i make a complicated password it will be a pain to login to windows so that means i compromise security just to login to windows easier

2. like said before they can piggyback on the microsoft login token and as soon as you first logged into a pc with the account that token is created and stays there for years bet most of you do not even delete old approved machines from the list which can be another vector of attack

yes technically i could just make a new email but that is just a backward process which again will suffer from the 1st problem

also remember how we could use pc's back in the day without the internet good luck today without piracy there is barely any legit way to still use your pc without the internet
