Read only?
Should files on my C drive (program data folder and program files folder etc...) have a tick by the side on the "read only" box?

It is normal for folders to have a box in read only since the folder itself doesn't track read only status and just defaults to that regardless of what the files inside are set to. It's only there to quickly make all the files in the folder read only or not.

If actual files are read only, that's a different issue.

Basically it's there so you know what you're about to change it to. A square means you haven't done anything yet, a check means you're about to make all the files in the folder read only, and empty means you're about to make everything not read only. Even after you change it and reopen the properties it will go back to being a square.

If you see a gray box, that's normal. This possibly means a few of the files within are read only and need to be left alone.

If you see a checkbox, that means all the folders and files are read only and no, that is not normal.

However the OS folders are such as Program Files, Program Files (x86), Program Data, Users, Windows... leave them alone. No need to make changes to these in any ways.

Now if it was created by YOU or an app such as a game, then that is fine but all the OS created stuff should be left as-is.

many important files and folders is read-only be default, as a safeguard. you can usually turn it off bot, i would not recommend that. you can do it for certain sub folders related to specific games or apps however.
All of the system C drive folders are "Read-Only" so it seems here.
