Just asking due to the root cause of why nvidia control panel > game program settings keeps resetting.
For me its just a minus symbol (-)

If actual files are read only, that's a different issue.
Basically it's there so you know what you're about to change it to. A square means you haven't done anything yet, a check means you're about to make all the files in the folder read only, and empty means you're about to make everything not read only. Even after you change it and reopen the properties it will go back to being a square.
If you see a checkbox, that means all the folders and files are read only and no, that is not normal.
However the OS folders are such as Program Files, Program Files (x86), Program Data, Users, Windows... leave them alone. No need to make changes to these in any ways.
Now if it was created by YOU or an app such as a game, then that is fine but all the OS created stuff should be left as-is.
