Misterious STUTTERS I can't find the source to
Hardware brothers and sisters, help a brother out.

For a couple years now, I've been using a RTX 2060 + RYZEN 5 5600 rig. Pure Joy. That said, a month or two ago, I got a RTX 4070 upgrade to it. BIG bump on performance, sure, but a good deal of stutters to go along with it.

I'm a long Afterburner + RTSS user always keeping my frametime/framerate bar flat as a board and my games as optimized as possible.

Thought it might be drivers so I tried a bunch of them (DDU installs and all).

Guess what?

Nothing.

Same random stutters.

I formatted my PC, updated my BIOS, my MOBO chipset, plugged the 2060 in, disabled Xbox Game Bar, Windows Game Bar, D.O.C.P (XMP), cleared DXCACHE, messed with pagefile, then with all the SYNC options (G-SYNC included) and even bought a RYZEN 7 5700X3D to see if it would make any difference... No difference. It's no thermal throttling either.

Honestly, what else can I test?

Maybe, my MOBO's damaged?

Maybe, my PSU is causing the stutter?

Can my, idk, 4070's LED light cause stutter?

Also, no matter if it's 60 or 120 FPS, the stutter's there.

And thank you for taking the time to read.

FULL RIG:

WINDOWS 10 PRO

RTX 4070 GALAX

RYZEN 7 5700X3D

ASUS B450M PRO S

MSI MAG A650BN 80 PLUS BRONZE

2x16GB 3200hz MEMORY

1TB HD

1TB NVME M.2

Have you tried disabling HAGS?
The only other thing that comes to mind is did you install Xtreme Tuner plus.
Was you using it before you swapped?
Maybe this program is the issue.
Did you connect the RGB control to the motherboard if it has it?
The only things that changed was power draw and PCIe 3.0 to 4.0.

You have covered a re-install format of the PC. like I have had happen in the past your PSU could be failing.
You could let your friend try the 4070 in another PC just to make sure it's not the card.

If you want to try another OS I suggest POP Nvidia, that is what I use, just in-stall Steam from their website for Linux, you will have to enable Steam Play in the settings. No need to learn command lines or anything this way.

Never had it enabled to begin with brother. Thanks for tip.

Never even touched Xtreme Tuner.

About RGB programs, the only one I had worked for my mouse and never gave me stutters. Currently, I have none installed.

Maybe, I'll look into another PC format; change to GPT; see if it helps something.

POP Nvidia, right? I'll look into that, too. Thanks for the tip.

Worth a try, if you ever decide to go for Win 11 it gets turned on by default.

Does it stutter if you turn vsync on?
Make sure m.2 is in bottom slot so data passes thru chipset and not straight to CPU. That would cut your GPU slot to 8x instead of 16x, if m.2 is in top slot.
Also get a motherboard with a gen 4 pcie slot for the gpu.

Yep, V-SYNC on/off stutters the same. Maybe it's some kind of cybernetic ghost haunting my PC or something?

Whoa. That really a thing? Since I got it a couple years back, I've always used the M.2 on the top slot and it never gave me stutters.

On the motherboard note... I'd really love not to spent much more moneys on a new one. Granted it's a x16 card, always heard 3.0 PCI wouldn't make much difference compared to a 4.0 PCI.
PCIE bandwidth is not the issue, if it was then a lot of people with similar specs would have the same issue but that isn't the case

3.0 x8 is enough bandwidth for most gaming instances, loss is within a few frames at worst

It's more than likely a Windows issue

Running a Ryzen 7 5700X3D and it still causes sttuters, sounds more like a windows is the troublemaker or something in the background causing it.

Is it just me, or are Ryzen systems running clean version of Windows are unreliable in terms of performance until debloat? As I have already seen such symptoms on my dead lenovo with Ryzen 5 5500U several times. I am starting to speculate it was the same case on my last HP with Ryzen 5 3500U.

try doing a clean boot of windows to eliminate software conflicts

Honestly it could come down to having a terrible Motherboard.

It could even be related to your SSD and/or HDD as well.

Test with latest 3DMark and Unigine Superposition off the SSD and see how it does.

ok this is a easy one....disable Nvidia HDMI audio in device manager.....it causes stutters on NgreedyA GPU's......every card since the GTX460 i have had to do this to get rid of stutters.....so a 460, 560, 570ti, 680 4gb, 770 4gb, 960, 970, 1050ti, 1060, 1070, and even now a 3080 all had to have their HDMI audio turned off to get rid of stuttering for me.......

type DEVICE in windows search, when the list populates, right click DEVICE MANAGER and run as admin.....when it opens look under sounds and gaming devices.......right click Nvidia HDMI sound and select disable.....then try playing games......

good luck
Afraid it's already disabled. Been aware of it for a while now. But thanks for the tip.

Just out of interest, go to Device Manager and see it it's still there.

I am not saying it's the problem, but the other day I went in to Device Manager and the NVIDIA Sound Driver was still present even though I had uninstalled it.

Just go into Sound Settings, it's all right there just like it was in XP, Vista, 7, 8...

nope never had your problems....lose screw between keyboard and monitor sounds like your issue......my 300 dollar 4300u laptop plays games without stutters......ironic mine is also a lenovo

yeah sorry friend but had better luck moving the M.2 drives to the top slot and off the bottom slot when only using a single drive.....also boot drives do better in to top slot.....and FYI Ryzen chips have 24 PCI-E lanes so the 16 slot never goes to 8 lanes unless you are using 3 total M.2 drives.....even using 2 M.2 drives the second is on the chipset PCI-E lanes and the biggest reason to move to the top slot on all AM4 based systems....ALL AM4......YOU DO NOT WANT ANYTHING BUT STORAGE ON THE CHIPSET LANES.....
