OS Market share - Desktop platform
4.45% Linux - StatCounter - July 2024

It's nice to see, but I don't know how they count the systems and what the margin for error is.

It's all depends on which websites the code is installed on and how likely a user of a particular OS is to use that website. But it's still a measure. The absolute figures might be incorrect but the relative is what it is.

A possible factor that could create bias is I'd imagine desktop Linux users are more likely to be privacy conscience so are more likely to use browsers and other tactics to mitigate fingerprinting so someone might get counted more than once.

Another factor that could change OS usage proportions is the usage of desktops/laptops as a whole, particularly in the home environment. A good chunk of past Windows users are possibly using tablets and mobiles now instead. If home desktops and laptops are going out of fashion then Windows usage will change too. Apple and Linux users are more likely to like the OS/ecosystem they use so usage will persist longer whereas Windows users just use windows because that’s what they get when buy a desktop/laptop in the shop. Even in the work environment - laptops are used less and tablets more.

The more I think about it, Steam survey is probably one of the better measures out there. It might focus on a particular market but I'd imagine it's more reliable and less likely to present statistical bias.

they'd have gotten more attention had they caught it at 4.20%...
Tonepoet 21 aug, 2024 @ 15:53
How is 4.45% a milestone? It doesn't even round up to 5%. It rounds down to 4%.

Because for the longest time it never even came above 2%.

Call me when they overtake Apple in 20 years

and they missed 4.20%!

they could have released 420 OS and got a huge market spike... but linux is just bad at marketing it's self even if it's handed it on a golden platter.

like why linux? so I can struggle to do everything and get hacked when enough people actually start using it that "hackers" actually care to "hack" it?

reminds me of how mac used to say "bla bla bla mac doesn't get windows viruses! mac is safer!"

then apple held a hack-a-thon thing with an actual reward giving people a reason to "hack a mac" and it didn't take long at all.

I'm skeptical that linux has dotted all their Ts and crossed all their Is and someone hasn't stuck a backdoor in there "just for tha lulz".

Linux being safer is kinda of meme, there are tons of vulnerabilities monthly for enterprise level linux OS such as RHEL, centos, ..

ya, like how servers are using those intel chips that are failing on mass and that's part of how we know that's a thing...

cuz apparently it's just cheaper to run consumer level intel chips on linux based "servers" now...

maybe that's why online games are so unstable these days :S

Windows 11 isn't worth a bucket of sweat from Steve Ballmer's armpits as he dances across a stage like a monkey.

The milestones don't change just 'cause you never reach 'em. They're kind of stuck in place at each mile. That's why they're milestones. You don't get to walk not even half a mile and call it a mile. Maybe if it was a round percentage point, or maybe even a full .5% increment I could understand, but unless 4.45% is some magical number where adoption rates explode for some reason, it just seems like a wholly arbitrary number.

Call me back when they actually reach 5%, like Apple dropped to in the 1990s[homework.study.com].

And let's be frank here: Apple is gaining market share too, at an even faster rate, with 16.1% of the market presently[macdailynews.com], so Linux isn't overtaking Apple before Apple overtakes Microsoft and grows as complacent with their marketshare leader position as Microsoft is now, so really looking at more like two hundred years than twenty before linux overtakes apple in the desktop operating system marketplace. And by then desktop computers will probably be discontinued in favor of snapdragon brainlett thought co-processors running Android Cyborg.

I'm not even sure the PC as we know it will exist in 20 years the way things are going...

everyone will just have musknet chips imbedded in their butts and you'll just have to sit down to access things.

Considering that it was around 3% around a year ago, it's rather sudden and swift growth that's no doubt caused by two major factors: Microsoft gradually destroying everything people liked about Windows, and Valve's Steam Deck.

Why would more more want to use as OS with:

Minimal spying, more secure, no forced updates, lots of choice with front end gui, a huge amount of free software, can use zfs, no need (or hack needed) for an offline account, no forced secure boot capable (or hack needed), no requirement for propietry drivers.

compared to say windows.

I use windows only for gaming due to issues with anti cheat in some games.

I wander how long it is before microsoft tries to force subscription only and the online account.

If in doubt look maybe at vmware and adobe as examples.

Why some stay with windows - fear of change I guess.
