Considering that it was around 3% around a year ago, it's rather sudden and swift growth that's no doubt caused by two major factors: Microsoft gradually destroying everything people liked about Windows, and Valve's Steam Deck.
I thought about the Steam Deck too, but since this is coming from Stat Counter and not Steam, doesn't it suggest this is more of a legitimate Linux market share increase as opposed to simple Steam Deck adoption?

I mean, you can probably go online on websites with the Steam Deck as though it were a desktop a PC, but I don't know if too many people are using it that way, and on websites that would be picked up by Stat Counter? Not sure though.

Even if the Deck doesn't affect statcounter, SteamOS has been an introduction to Linux for a lot of gamers since its release, one that actually works quite well considering Valve has put so much effort into Proton so active support on their end would actually help using SteamOS over Windows make sense.

How is 4.45% a milestone? It doesn't even round up to 5%. It rounds down to 4%.

theyre so easy to use now, even the apps stores and apps are getting mainstream advertising.

it doesnt do any good its better everyone just uses the same thing.

It was at 3% a year ago, so going up another 1% in a year isn't all that impressive let's be honest.

It's going to take years for Linux to enter mainstream, and that's IF it continues gaining market share consistently.

Considering it went from around 3% to 4.45% in a year, that's almost a 50% jump in user count in just a single year. Compared to Windows it's still tiny but compared to itself in the last year, that's a huge increase for a single year.

Perspective matters.

Well it's still around 2% on Steam. So it's not showing up in Steam stats all that much.

matter already fixed, with the new secure boot update, dual booting with Linux is compromised. We are trying to prevent the spread.

Apparently the 'fix' is aimed at Grub and wasn't supposed to affect dual boot systems. Odd that they waited 2 years to get around to it though.

First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.

Linux has been around for decades and never broke 1%, then it finally got to around 2% and stayed there. Then in like a year or two, that share more than doubled. That is very impressive.
