cheap or expensive m.2?
as it says on the tin. the 7000mbps speed is alluring but way more expensive than the 2000mbps one i first found. Is it worth the extra $100?

Also not sure what OP means about "Is it worth extra $100?

A decent size and fast PCIE 3.0 X4 NVME SSD is approx $200

Latest ones (PCIE 4.0) with double read speed and about 1.5X write speed over the above option is around $240

Both prices are for a 2TB

1TB for my above examples are $115 PCIE 3.0 X4 ~ $140 PCIE 4.0

If you old NVME SSD is only 2000MB/s well that must be quite old or bottom of the barrel stuff. As most of the more modern-day, cheaper NVME SSDs are 3500MB/s

All I can say is when more devs start using Direct Storage or similar implementations in the nest 1-3 years everyone here saying you dont need at least 5000mb/s or better will be in poor shape unless they have twice the ram capacity of a normal gaming rig to make up for their storage speed kneecapping.
Nobody knows right now what will happen, to what extent, or when.

And ultimately, it's not like years and years from now, things are likely to be substantially worse in what storage offers than they are now. It's more likely to be the opposite and you're probably looking at higher capacity and greater speeds for the same cost (PCI Express 5.0 drives will likely be a thing). Buying now if you don't actually need that speed now gets you less in return compared to simply getting it when it is necessary.
