CPU temp question
Just built a new comp with a Core i7 1200F. I've read that temps should generally not go above 80 C. Does that mean that there shouldn't even be a brief spike above 80 - Core Temp is giving me "max" temps of up to 95 but it seems to be brief spikes only.

Another thing that's weird is that Speedfan and Core Temp are giving me different temp reads (Speedfan lower) but I guess I'll trust Core Temp.

12th gen doesnt generally start to thermal throttle until around 100-105C.
im guessing you mean a i7 12700f and if your on a air cooler im guessing its probably normal
air coolers let you hit max temp almost immediately as long as its just quick spikes it really only matters how it acts in game if your running at 80c thats to high IMO.check your voltages fan and or pump speeds (aio) and consider reseating your cooler (re-paste)
im running a 13900k and run between 55-70c in game spikes maybe 80-85c with a 360 AIO with turbo boost and enhancement turned on.my idle temps are 34-37c

I've run hardware over 85° for years with no issues
Speed fan hasn't been updated for a long time, don't use it.
it will throttle at around 90-95c
as long as its not throttling its fine

running multiple sensor programs at the same time can give incorrect results

I don't know if this will help but,

"Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool"
Actually tried re-pasting and it's the same result. I probably did it wrong twice now. Thermal throttling on a game like total war but not on a less processor-intensive game. So that still can't be right.
What CPU cooler do you actually use? You never said that in your post.
It's the stock Intel one
those tends to be a bit weak. i would recommend going for a new cooler. i am not however an expert on coolers so, all i can give you is information that the stock cooler is too weak. that is all the information i have.
Thanks, I have one on order. Funny thing - if I play Starcraft 2, a 2010 game that is more processor intensive, I'm getting thermal throttling. A far newer game like Ruined King, which is a simple 3v3 JRPG game, the temps barely go above idle. Still not sure if I repasted bad but will be repasting again anyway.
i can explain that. starcraft 2 is built for 2 cores, while a newer game is built for more cores. also take into account starcraft 2`s heavy processor use. starcraft 2 have a lot of units loaded at once, while that is not the case with ruined king.
Big success on the new install, temps are idling below 20 C . . . ice ice baby.
80 degrees is an outdated spec, Intel doesn't throttle until 100~105 degrees Celsius, AMD doesn't throttle until 90~95.

You really only need to worry about temperatures exceeding 80 if you're overclocking, or if it's getting that hot with little to no load on the CPU (i.e. no paste, poor contact, etc.)
