SSD upgrade for my laptop.
What would be a good upgrade for me? Like, brand, model and speed. I need more internal storage.

I currently have an Samsung NVME m2 SSD 500GB.

I do play games of course. I do SOME file transfert but not often. What would be an okay choice in your opinion? I dont want something cheap but I don't want to overpay either. I estimate that I'd be probably fine with at least 1tb.

Sorry if I can't give more info about my drive. I am on Linux and I didn't find yet how to provide more information on it. I will update the thread with more infos once I figure that out.

I don't want to open my laptop just to read the model on it.

Okay. According to hwinfo, this is the model of the SSD.

nvme drive controller is on the ssd

what cpu?
that will say what pci-e rev it can use upto
and the board will limit how many pci-e lanes it can use
and what m.2 lengths are supported

once you know those things

start here
https://pcpartpicker.com/products/internal-hard-drive/#D=1

filter by
size, 1+tb
form factor, m.2 22(length)
interface m.2 pci-e rev

I noticed crucial got an electronic catalog where I can just input my laptop model number. Is crucial a good brand? Would save me the trouble.

Does the laptop have room for more ssds? As many do. Please check for that. Wd Blue, Black or a model of Samsung would be fine. Look at 4TB

It has a single slot. I'll check the price for the WD Black.

have had great experiences with samsung so far.

also, im assuming thats the only drive in the laptop, meaning it contains the OS as well?

as for size and speeds, i believe the higher sized drives run slower than the lower sized ones?

but in your case it being a laptop and only having 1 slot and/or no pcie slots to use an add-in card.

going with a larger sized drive may be the best bet and will last quite awhile size wise, if you arent uninstalling/reinstalling games to free up space regularly.

samsung prices i see.

1TB's seems to be generally ranging around $100.

2TB's ranging around $150

4TB's seem to jump about double the price at around $300-$400 lol..

in any case, i guess what you choose will depend on your budget, or if you are willing to save a bit more, to get something larger in size and at a decent price, or wait for sales.

For a Laptop I would look at Crucial P3 or WD Blue. As you probably eouldnt get the full performance out of some higher end models anyways such as WD Black
i would not recommend western digital if you are planning to use it for a while. i had western digital harddrives myself and none of them lasted more than a year. seagate or toshiba is the safest in terms of endurance. seagate is usually better in terms of speed and cost however.

i have had plenty of WD drives that didnt fail.

same with my samsung drives.

as well as other brands.

the laptop probably doesnt take a 2.5in drive

hdd should last 10-20+ years
2.5in drives mostly fail due to physical damage, g-force shock

i have not had any samsung drives fail exactly but, i do have a drive that stops working temporarily if enough data is written to it in a short time. then i have to reboot my pc to get it working again.
