Is it worth the upgrade?
currently have a 3700x and a 3080 but was considering the jump to AM5. I wanted to get a 7800x3d and pair it with my current card. I play at 3440x1440 res, I'm not sure if the 3d vcache is significant to what I already have now.

Either do that or just get a 5800x3d or something
A 7800X3D would be a substantial upgrade for gaming. I wouldn't go to AM5 if you're already on AM4 unless going with the 7800X3D, because anything else can be just about matched (in gaming) with a 5800X3D which is obviously cheaper than an entire AM5 platform. If you also want a general performance uplift for productivity or applications, Zen 4 is good and the 7900 non-X (if you have a use for all its cores) in particular is so performance efficient it isn't fair.

Whether it's worth it depends, but generally, the fastest CPUs are approaching twice as fast as yours. You can reference the first chart in this review for the 14900K to get an idea.

https://www.techpowerup.com/review/intel-core-i9-14900k/17.html

Keep in mind all those percentages are being scaled to the 14900K being reviewed and not the fastest CPU which is almost 6% faster here, so the percentages below are a bit lower than they show relative to the 7800X3D. You can see by then that the 3700X can be almost half as fast. In reality, you won't see twice the uplift unless you're always CPU bound now and never GPU bound though, but it's still a pretty substantial difference.

I personally went to a 5800X3D from my 3700X (7800X3D didn't yet exist, and I wouldn't have made such a change anyway with the 5800X3D available on the existing platform). It was a pretty substantial uplift for me in CPU limited things, but I feel like the 3700X is still more than serviceable (just not considered too fast anymore), especially for GPU limited things.

If you're on the fence and not desperate for an upgrade, you could wait for Computex in June. AMD is expected to give details on the upcoming AM5 stuff and we might get information on when the base lineup and the following X3D will launch. I'm personally waiting on the 9800X3D. But a 7800X3D would be a substantial upgrade still, cheaper, and is available now.

even going from overclocked to 4.4 all cores 3900x to 5800x3d was worth it.
Depends on what games you play and at what resolution, much of the gains will be seen more at 1080p because it's more CPU-bound, at higher resolutions and more graphically demanding games, you'll see less of a benefit because the RTX 3080 is still the main bottleneck in those scenarios.

You can expect upwards of 30% in the least in just raw CPU performance from Zen2 to Zen4, but it's debatable if it's really worth spending the money yet because there's going to be a new generation in a few more months that'll be even faster. It's not that simple to justify the purchase right now.

if you're going for 7800x3d, you're gon need to upgrade your mobo too. i'd say stick with 5800x3d
In a similar situation, running a 3700x and new 7800xt @1440p. I was looking at getting the 7800x3d but as the new 9000 series cpus are coming decided i'm going to go for the 5800x3d.

Will still be a nice jump in performance and can upgrade to AM5 once the 9000s prices settle.
If you are already on AM4 then why not to upgrade to the 5800X3D instead?
Yeah, 7800X3D will be faster but not that much to justify a new motherboard + DDR5 memory kit over your existing AM4 platform.
I would wait a bit and see the Ryzen 9000 series and the Intel Core Ultra 200 series. Both are expected to show up at Computex which is a month away and give the products 2-3 months for reliability fixes and stuff. I'd be surprised if they don't bring anything more than previous generations other than NPUs.

UserBenchmark is useless even for comparing AMD to AMD, stop using it

The algorithm has been screwed with so many times over the years that none of it is even accurate anymore.

No.

I upgraded from a 5800x to a 7800x3D about 6 months ago and it's been worth every penny.
