Installing Steam OS
Hi everyone

I'm starting to create a Steam OS computer.

Instruction on https://store.steampowered.com/steamos/buildyourown?l=italian speak about two different images. One for custom environment and another for steamdeck.

When I try to click to the download button steam give me always the steam deck Version.

Are instruction old and now there are only one versione for all environments or something went wrong?

Thanks a lot for all the tips

That page is out of date, it talks about the old SteamOS 2.0 which is no longer maintained. The Steam Deck uses the new SteamOS 3.0.

SteamOS 3.0 is specific to the Steam Deck, it will not work properly on other hardware. Even if you get it to boot the installer is hard coded to the Steam Deck's hardware configuration.

SteamOS right now is only available for the Steam Deck.

ChimeraOS is basically SteamOS 3.0 and only a few features missing.
It is limited to AMD Vulkan gpus.

Very good for living room setup with controller. It has also desktop just like Steam Deck.

Ew, you mean that bloated and very unstable Ubuntu?

The eraly SteamOS was built upon Debian, latest SteamOS is built upon Arch. So I recommend just these 3 to you:

  1. Debian[www.debian.org]

  2. Mint Debian[linuxmint.com]

  3. Arch Linux[archlinux.org]
Helpful: Arch compared to other distributions[wiki.archlinux.org]
