Retropie was also one of my first in-depth experiences with Linux.
I think the best place to start with PI is to dive right in.
It's fun and friendly and pretty low risk. You can always flash a new OS in a few seconds.
Yeah Klipper is a little on the steep on the learning curve.
I have Octoprint running on mine and it's great.
I think the best way to start is install Raspberry OS and start learning / get use to Linux environment (both desktop and command line).
