afaik its not removed - you just have to start/stop the service by hand

No they never did any such updates.

In 2021 I still had a PC with Win7 and all the latest updates and old games that used that still worked juat fine.

Win8 and later do not support such games by it should be removed anyways if you go buy a digital copy of such a game.

it is used by aliens versurs predator 2 and ghost master, both of which works in windows 8.1 for me. that means that i have yet to install that update in windows 8.1. i just want to know what it is called, so that i can avoid it. i tried searching first but, i did not find the information.

The update just disabled it in Win 7, later it got removed in windows 10 1903, I don't remember. KB3086255?

Open the registry editor and search HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\secdrv
If you still have it, click on the Dword "Start" and if it says 4 (disabled), change it to 2 (automatic)

If you don't have it, look for patches/mods/fixes.

No Windows update removes support for SecuROM because it has always been driverless. There is that 2015 update mentioned that makes the SafeDisc driver by default disabled.

For your SafeDisc games, look into https://github.com/RibShark/SafeDiscShim for an alternative, assuming it even works in Windows 7.

It literally did, every Windows release did until Microsoft blocked it. Stop making things up.

Please don't make things up. Needing or not needing a driver means nothing. No sure why you even blurted that out.

MS blocked securom for security reasons. Learn to read.

You just made that one up; PCGamingWiki even points out that SecuROM is not blocked. Last I checked my disc copy of GTA San Andreas works just as well as it did back in Windows XP.

Good luck running games like the command and conquer series (the issue appears only if you have physical copies)
In some cases it is necessary and in others it is not. ;)

They misidentified SecuROM in those articles. The links directing to Microsoft say nothing about SecuROM, only Safedisc or secdrv.sys the Safedisc driver.

In addition, the driver in question can be reinstalled with PowerShell scripts - https://github.com/ericwj/PsSecDrv
