But imo, the linux side have to be more structured than it is now :
- too many distros imo, surely more than 200 flavors ... Even if it seems fun, it's completly unproductive .Imagine if people can structure themselv around key point as it is the case for the kernel.
We can imagine more larger and bigger group working for kernel , or wayland , or proton , security, etc ....
For the people switching for the first time and learning that there are Linux distros, it's obvious that one of the most common questions is "Which distro is the best," and everyone pulls out the most common distros, which is good because they have large software repos by default so the software support is good. I would find it tiring to test so many different components that have variaciones and the differences are not big.

When I switched to Linux the first time. I just used Ubuntu, then Mint. Eventually I felt more comfortable with Linux and decided to go for an Arch-based distro.

It's not perfect and there is a handful of game that won't run no matter what I do. But, the benefits far outweights those limitations.

But, to go back to Windows 7, I just finished a test. I ran Windows 7 exclusively for 1 week. Of course I didn't use it with any sensible data. I kind of understand why people miss it. It's a really elegant and snappy OS. A far cry from the bloated mess later versions of Windows would become. Was a fun experiment.

But, back to EndeavourOS it is. That's my real home.

Yeah, the "best" is entirely subjective. Most distros can do the same things, the differences lie in what's packaged with it out of the box.

Personally, CachyOS has been the best to me because of the high performing kernel of the same name that's packaged with it instead of the Arch or Zen kernel and various performance optimizations included out of the box, along with the latest NVIDIA beta drivers which has made getting Wayland working seamlessly on NVIDIA with no actual work needed on my part. That wasn't really an option even just a month or so ago, NVIDIA has started to put more effort into their Linux drivers, and later this year their upcoming open source kernel modules will be the default that's packaged with the driver instead of the current proprietary modules.

CachyOS is one of the fastest distros as far as frames per second go because of the optimizations and kernel, if not the fastest.

Heh.

I tried CachyOS. Honestly, I don't know if it's my hardware composition or whatever they did to the OS. But, I had a lot of weird issues with it.

From certain games freezing or refusing to close.

I didn't bother troubleshooting much really. Didn't see the point when Endeavour just worked as is. The performance was better in Cachy, but not enough to convince me to try and fix whatever was going on with it. But, it was weird.

I'm probably just going to try and install an optimized kernel on Endeavour and see how it compares. Will doubles as a good learning experience too.

CachyOS kernel is on the AUR

Haven't had any issues like you mentioned

It's probably related to my specific hardware then.

But, yeah, im currently getting the cachyos kernel from the AUR. Can't wait for it to finish compiling so I can see if I can get the best of both worlds.

Honestly, I wish I was savy enough to fix whatever the hell was going on with CachyOS but I'm not "there" yet in my Linux adventure. XD

Could be something stupid, it's a hit or miss, some people have similar issues while others do not

good just makin sure. ppl make it far harder than it has to be.
Some basics, no one should have that much of a problem, even if they do, the internet has answers.

Anyway, I should try (Beyond and Hardened) Linux from scratch to learn more about the OS if I'm going for grid and cluster computing.
its not really good for anything but learning the innards of linux. you CAN daily drive LFS for a system but that's worse than Gentoo. wouldn't recommend it.

And what makes it better than the stock kernel?

uses so much less resources and is faster.

It’s better than the Arch and Zen kernel because it has further performance optimizations, in benchmarks, CachyOs was even capable of beating Intel’s Clear Linux

Is that just artificial benchmarks or does it even translate to real usage?

Well, I'll have the opportunity to see for myself. Just managed to iron out the vulkan issues I had after installing CachyOS's kernel. Now, the computer seems to work as intended. Running EndeavourOS with the kernel of Cachy.

The problems I had before with CachyOS itself don't seem to happen either now.

With the config I have, every frame matters. With a bit of luck, this should give me a slight edge in games that matters to me.

It does, because it’s not about synthetic benchmarks and gaming performance is marginally better with that kernel

I can't speak to the other distros, but I switched to Mint, cold turkey. Basically everything worked out of the box. I had to put in some effort to get my NAS shares going, but it wasn't anything crazy.

One thing I think some people run into is possibly certain sets of hardware have trouble. It's easy to dip a toe into linux though, just to get a look-see. The install media for it is literally a bootable copy of the OS. If that works for you, then you're probably good to go.

I was running Windows 7 up to about March/April this year. I drew that line in the sand as far back as when I had to retire Windows XP, Windows 7 was going to be my last Microsoft OS, period. I'm glad that the transition has gone so smoothly, but I was jumping in with both feet regardless. I'm so done with Microsoft at this point.
