Thanks r.linder for detailed description.
hello
aye agree nice explain from both of you so thx @A&A and @r.linder , even for me it wasn't that clear before
You're welcome, glad to be of service
Well, Univeristy of Ruse is not funding distros, but has public mirrors 1.8TB in total.
They have:
-Linux Mint
-Linux Lite
-PCLinuxOS
-epel (which is packages for Red Hat, Fedora and CentOS? Idk, I am so lost with this branch of distros.)
- Hiren's BootCD (is this some kind of custom Windows iso or a package with tons of programs... I don't get it)

I have a question regard Linux.
How they can keep up all the Repositories? I mean it need somekind of Servers and Net provider for all those uploads. Where from their Revenue if basicaly all Linux is free?
As A&A already said, it's primarily a collective effort between average users donating, funding from various businesses and education, and there are some repos and distros that aren't actually free.

For example, RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) is a version of Linux developed by a subsidiary of IBM that is developed specifically for the commercial market. I've frequently seen commercials on TV advertising RHEL, there's quite a bit of support for some versions of Linux in particular.
Fedora is related to RHEL in that it's a continuation of the RHL (Red Hat Linux) project that ended in the early 2000s. Fedora is more focused for general users rather than RHEL that's subscription based and made for production environments, and there are distros based on Fedora like Bazzite and Nobara that are great for gaming machines.

Linux is at least partially protected from abuse by big companies that want to exploit it for their own ends by the GNU General Public License (GPL) which more or less guarantees that FOSS software remains free and open source so that contributions of software developers can benefit all users. It doesn't stop companies from making money off of FOSS, but it does put limits on it based on definitions of free software.

GNU's definition of free software:
Αναρτήθηκε αρχικά από GNU.org:
“Free software” means software that respects users' freedom and community. Roughly, it means that the users have the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. Thus, “free software” is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of “free” as in “free speech,” not as in “free beer.” We sometimes call it “libre software,” borrowing the French or Spanish word for “free” as in freedom, to show we do not mean the software is gratis.

You may have paid money to get copies of a free program, or you may have obtained copies at no charge. But regardless of how you got your copies, you always have the freedom to copy and change the software, even to sell copies.

More specifically regarding RHEL, Fedora is their upstream "bleeding edge" consumer platform where they develop and test new features and packages. CentOS (Community Enterprise OS) used to be a 1:1 community maintained repackage of RHEL with the branding and support systems removed. It was still controlled by RedHat however, and after the somewhat recent debacle where RedHat changed it to a rolling release that also functioned as an up stream of RHEL there was a massive exodus of CentOS users moving to one of the many 1:1 repackages such as AlmaLinux (developed and owned by the parent company of CloudLinux), RockyLinux that was started by the former founders of CentOS, and Oracle Linux, etc.

Not only do various distributions / community based foundations or organizations receive monetary donations as you've noted, but many organizations that have a symbiotic relationship with various distributions will often host a distributions mirror repositories for free because it benefits both the distribution and the organization hosting the mirror. For example colleges with computer sciences will often host mirrors of the major distributions which they utilize in their courses. Data Centers will often host mirrors of the distributions that they support for their clients services because it benefits them by both being faster for their clients to install packages from the repository, but also substantially reduces their bandwidth commit needs as those installations don't have to leave their network and consume bandwidth.

^ exactally this. Those are distributions they likely use for their CS courses and thus host their own mirrors for them. Regarding EPEL, that is another community repo that is Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux. It has additional packages and/or versions of packages that are not supported or included in the official RHEL repos/mirrors. Some things for example that are backported from upstream distros that have not yet been adopted for RHEL; etc.

EDIT: re-reading r.linder's post and it wasn't clear (at least to me) that they meant the RHEL "consumer version" project ended in the early 2000's, not Fedora. That passage makes more sense now.

My Pentium MMX may need to upgrade to Win 12 because 7 is now a bit slow.

Wow, how have you backported everything that requires SIMD extensions to work on your CPU? How much memory are you rocking on that thing? and what type of memory is it?

1 byte x4

SIMD on simpsons hit and run with 64 bit extentions, this ensures memory of over 9133 - nbit to ensure comparable instruction performance as AVX2.

So in essence the CPU is doing compression of the 7Zip file software to ensure compression is compressed.

As for memory, this runs at 1000ms native but because of applying glue to the USB it now runs at 4400mhz DDR4.

In appliance with Direct X the shader models need to bve 6.77 so we enfused the XGA with the VGA and then used the noodle like PCB of the terminatiors mind chip to add 10GB of ram so the GPU is now capable of gaming.
hello

i wish a merry christmas to everybody who's reading and posting into the cozy thread of our op @Nosteru

And today just found this nice summury about the game industry i wanted to share with you
https://www.gamesindustry.biz/gamesindustrybiz-presents-the-year-in-numbers-2024

and a tool memcached , because we talked about this kind of tool in private some time ago ,mostly for our linux lovers
https://github.com/memcached/memcached
https://memcached.org/about

note ;
again some news issues has been discovered for the beta mikeysoft os w11 with it "quality update" ( rofl - mikeysoft should be part of our healthcare french system just because laughfing is good for health )
https://www.borncity.com/blog/2024/12/24/windows-11-dezember-2024-updates-machen-startmenue-probleme/
and i couldn't thanks Valve more about it choice by using a linux os as base for their deck : imagine what has been happened if valve has choosen to use w11 as os for it...
now for more "techky" people

Not sure what memcached does in the context of this thread but it is commonly used as a cache for web applications.
Hohohooo Merry Christmas Cozy Members! :)

This is exactly my experience with Windows. There were actual, reasonable, upgrades to Windows versions in the past. There was no way to convince me to swap over to Windows ME, NT, 2000, Vista, 8. Moving from WinXP SP3 to Win7 x64 was a fantastic UPGRADE as was moving from 95/98 to XP. It was not seamless, nor without issues, but I could see the reason behind it and it did get better.

I would always lag when changing over the OS in my main PCs until the news / reviews / tests could show me a clear reason. I expected the same thing with Windows 10 but after years of bad news and having many clients pay me to uninstall it, or reinstall Win7, there was no sense in making the same mistake.

What's the solution to the Windows 7 "upgrade"? It's certainly not Win11 and compatibility issues (alternate software finding / learning) is an extra hurdle with Linux.
What have you found to be incompatible? You can always use a VM or dual boot to test everything out without affecting your existing system.

I've had enough experience dual/triple booting to know that I am not interested in this either. There was a time when it was fun, neat and cool to do but the novelty wears off and eventually I need to get back to work. I really just want one OS on my PCs and one OS on my phones.

Correct about VM, I will need to start testing alternatives at some point but life is busy enough at this time. I'll probably just start with an SSD swap and go from there.

You keep insisting that your software is incompatible with up to date operating systems, yet I provided a means you could test before migrating.

Of course it doesn't work for political incompatibility as the letter in your user icon suggests...
He isn't even being political here so don't make it about politics over his profile picture being a green Q which can mean freaking anything
