"I just can't shake this feeling that I've been forced to upgrade to something worse."
And- more importantly- they are smart and have a solution for you, Herman.
This is what it feels like (to me) being one of the few, million, Win7 users. I keep waiting for the real benefits and the real value to arrive that will make sense to me to upgrade. MS has been releasing many updates but I when I look at what's become of Windows I see very little upgrade. Am I missing something besides drivers / DX12 and Dark Mode?
Thank you so much for these links. This is wonderful, quality, content. :)
I did use it at work for quite a while and the layout and workflow is great.
I hate the 10/11 start menu and search function.
Isn't the biggest reason for needing to ditch 7 as the daily driver the security updates?
It all depends on your use case. In my case (and many of my friends / family), we have been using Win7 for ~15 years or so and have gotten used to it's issues and quirks. We don't necessarily need to use the latest software or games and most of what we do is still supported on Win7.
Security updates have been available up until 2024.10.10. November was the first month that the monthly security update was not readily available. The reason was due to browser functioning issues.
Win7 can still run Steam and modern browsers (Firefox / Chrome) in the form of r3dfox & Supermium and others. Until the day that Windows 7 ceases to be usable, secure and valuable, I expect most of "us" will continue to use it daily.
Cool, makes sense.
I browsed for copies on ebay to have in case I ever go the urge to explore it, however all these sellers are trying to sell copies for brand new prices for this old OS. Hard pass for me.
if the OS drops down to around 20 USD i might pick it up.

lol windows xp has a higher market share than windows 8.0
windows 8.0 was such a hot pile of garbage.
This is actually true. I was selling Windows 8 during it's release and it was ... awkward.
You can download the ISO fairly easily, just make sure it's a SP1 release.
