HDR
need help setting HDR for windows 11 and also supported games , i never used HDR before , but now got new monitor with HDR supported

things i did already ,
->turned on HDR from display settings of windows

->turned on the auto HDR thing which popped up while i was playing games ( i assumed it applies auto HDR to all games that supports / not supports HDR )

->tried turning on HDR from inside some games like destiny 2 and division 2 but they both looked kinda weird , like whitewashed , but maybe its my vision , since i used to look it in non HDR mode previously

Washed out picture, it's a typical issue of bad/lackluster HDR implementation on monitors, and Windows not handling HDR very great.
Did you use the HDR tuning app from Windows store?

Did you set your gpu control panel to display 10-bit colour depth?

i have max 8 bit color depth and havent yet installed that app
Okay, well, what GPU are you using? You're need to set your GPU to use 4:2:2 colour space at 10 bit for decent HDR.

Also, don't overlook windows HDR tuning app. It will set your black and whites.

gtx 1060
Make sure you're using an HDMI 2.1 cable.

Set the nvidia gpu control panel to 10 bit color in the color management panel.

Have a read of this specification sheet from HDMI to explain the HDMI uses and bandwidth.

https://www.hdmi.org/spec/index
If you're wondering what HDMI version you are running, you can find it via windows.

On Windows, you can use the System Information tool:

Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
Type msinfo32 and press Enter.
Look for the "Components" section on the left and expand it.
Select "Display."
Check the details for your graphics adapter. It might mention HDMI version.

Device Manager:
You can also check the HDMI version through the Device Manager:
Right-click on the Start button and select "Device Manager."
Expand the "Display adapters" category.
Right-click on your graphics adapter, select "Properties."
Go to the "Details" tab and choose "Hardware Ids" from the Property drop-down.
Look for "VEN_xxxx&DEV_xxxx," then search online to find details about your graphics adapter
Unless i remember correctly you need 10 or 12bit for HDR to work, go into the NVIDIA CP, go to change resolution and scroll down, click use NVIDIA color settings, for Output color depth choose 10 or 12bpc, if neither of those show up then shrug.

With that said
HDR makes things VERY BRIGHT, specifically WHITE
So you may want to fine tune your HDR settings if possible.

HDMI 2.1 cable is not required for HDR itself btw, but you should be using a decent cable either way, cable quality can matter when it comes to things like HDR being available like its supposed to.

Can you post a link to your monitor, you say it only shows 8bit so we should check to make sure.

The HDR tuning app is complete crap it does not help one bit and windows 11 in rubbish at implementing it. The fact remains is HDR on pc is still rubbish, I know I got a HDR gpu and monitor and it really does nothing to the picture. It is better on mac and ps5, hell it is better on my android phone but on a windows pc it is total rubbish.
If your monitor is only using 8bit then thats possibly why it doesnt look right when its supposedly turned on

So check the NVIDIA settings as i described and decide then whether to keep it on or off depending on what bit rates are available.

Also, from what ive seen that monitor uses HDMI 2.0, which is fine

Well, my experience differs from yours. I have enjoyed a fair amount of games in 10 bit HDR on my pc and t.v.

My experience has been great. Very enjoyable. But then I don't have a PS5 or any other console to compare to. Only HDR broadcasts on satellite or Netflix. And anyway, Sony promised 8k and now have removed it from their packaging!
