Upgrade to 9000 Ryzen Series
I currently have a 5800x, and I was looking forward to seeing the Zen 5 line-up. Obviously we don’t have benchmarks yet, but is anyone else planning to upgrade from the 5000 series? I plan on waiting for the 3D models and a couple months after that with a minor discount. You can even see past pricing history CPUs go down generously after a few months anyways.

I've been wanting to upgrade for a while, but DDR5 ECC UDIMMs are pretty slow to roll out. First they were only available in 4800 MT/s, now they go up to 5600 MT/s, but since the CPUs are going to support much faster, I want to wait till I can get at least 6400 MT/s.

I'm keeping my Ryzen 9 3950X till I die
Yes, I plan to move from my 5800X3D to the 9800X3D (or whatever it's called), but that will likely come later this year around the release of Arrow Lake, or early next year, so I won't be updating as soon as Zen 5 launches.

I find this works in my favor anyway since...

1. It will afford me the option to wait and let those initial issues pan out.

2. See what Arrow Lake offers (although I'm 99% sure I'll be going Zen 5 over that based on current expectations).

3. Hopefully get a better idea of RAM compatibility.

The latter is pretty important to me as I don't merely fall into the "throw two single rank DIMMs of 16 GB in it and call it a day" position like most do. I already have 64 GB of DDR4 (four dual rank DIMMs at that) running well at 3,600 MHz, and I'm hoping to exceed that capacity while still meeting whatever is the sweet spot for the IF clock on the new CPUs. Currently it's 6,000 MHz for Zen 4. Four DIMMs and/or dual rank is heavy on DDR5 and AM5 especially, so I don't think I'll be able to mindlessly throw as much DIMMs at it this time around.

Right now, I think I'll be looking at something like 2x 48 GB (maybe 2x 64 GB?), but 32+ GB DIMMs are currently dual rank. That should stand a better chance at running at 6,000 MHz+ than four dual rank DIMMs though. Between new chipsets, AGESA/BIOS, and RAM, I'm waiting on time and some gambling with this last one. I hope the worst case scenario is I fall just shy of whatever the "sweet spot" for the IF is and won't lose much due to the X3Ds losing less performance with decreasing RAM speed.

But yes, I'll be moving to this in all likelihood. In reality I could wait at least another generation (if not more) since a 5800X3D is by no means slow, but between my 3700X to 5800X3D being such a big uplift in a short time span, and my use case favoring CPU performance (Minecraft), I'll probably jump early unless other financial restrictions come up.

Yeah my decision is mostly based on long term investment and spreading out my upgrades. Plus a 9800x3D sounds like it would be a big boost from a 5800x

Definitely.

I did a 3700X to 5800X3D, and the 5800X to 7800X3D is probably an even bigger jump. Add another generation onto that and there's no way it won't be worthwhile.

I'll probably go for the initial offering and not wait for the 3D. I had a 9900k Intel that I upgraded a few years later to amd ryzen 9 5900x which is starting to show its age when paired with my 4090. My notebook 4090 with Intel 13950h actually is a better cpu performer than the desktop 5900x so I just have to do the full mobo ram and cpu upgrade in July.

Initial offering might be good too. Granted at looking the price history of the 7800x3D it went down by like $100 within 6 months. Worth waiting

Probably not good idea to jump on the Ryzen 9000 series bandwagon until X3D versions come out later. Just like they did with 7000 series.

I don't see any point really. What do you expect to gain from such an Upgrade. Cpu like 5800X should be fine for 'years'

At least wait for benchmarks and a wide selection of Motherboard along with the X3D CPU models. Next time, don't settle for anything less then Ryzen X3D CPU.

You could also sell existing CPU and install a 5800X3D and that would be a good bump up alone.

Looking forward towards any DDR5 based system means basically doing a whole new build and clean OS install

the point is performance and FPS
when i switched my 7600x for a 7800X3D i gained over 30 fps in cyberpunk 2077 and never touched that game again
i will switch for the 9800x3d soon as it comes out myself

I bought this cpu way before any X3D announcements/rumors were made. It was the best thing at the time. But buying another AM4 CPU is dumb, especially within the same generation.

Article came out yesterday amd already said 9000 cpus won't beat 7 series x3d cpus. Better off getting a new board and stuff when they come out for mem, update bios and get a 7800x3d

A lot of people are under this misconception there's no difference because of youtube videos. I have a 5800x an x3d and a 7800x3d I can put in the 5800x and most games won't ever see 100% gpu usage. Dying light 2, battlefield, darktide hell even kingdom come. Put in one of the others and boom bottleneck is gone, I have no clue how these videos don't find this when it's measurable across gpus and cpus. 7900xtx, xt 80 super 70 ti I could get the bottleneck on everyone on a 5800x.

amd 9xxx is just the year indicator
newer slower cpus will not be faster than the top ones from a few years ago

If anything they will just have something like a 5800X or 5950X labeled as a 9600X, able to deliver the same performance at lower clocks and power consumption.
