so i wanted to charge my ps3 controller, no big deal, let me just grab its cable and a power block and it doesnt charge. but wait, i can charge my nintendo switch controllers, unless that charger is a third party. why is it third anyway? wouldnt it be second? something about sony's tech is you can only charge it by plugging it into the console, well thats kinda dumb, like no alternate and faster way to charge it and besides official or third party devicess?

It`s common practice to make you as much dependent as possible of using your product and only your product.

Because the chargers for DS3 controllers have to have a chip for it. They do not run off standard USB chargers. This changed with the DS4 and DS5 controllers, which are standard USB like XboxOne and Switch controllers; or stuff from Razer or 8bitDo.

You can buy stand-alone chargers for DS3 controllers for around $15

I'm not going to even reply about Apple, not worth the time.

Let's be realistic. DualShock 3 is very old, so old that it was not designed for dedicated USB charging ports (DCP), the generalization of which was released in 2007, but if you have a computer, you can still charge it there.

the ds3 needs to talk to the device through usb before it will charge

dumb usb chargers will not charge it, you need to use a pc or smart charger to trick the controller into charging

the ds4 or dualsense can charge from any kind of usb charger

on my ds3 controllers i added a separate usb liion charge module to, it has micro port now, to charge it on anything

I remember back these days when PS2 was released worldwide, and these had hardware included to control missiles, literally a steering system hardware / missile guidance systems implemented, so all PS2 owners were "asked" to return their PS2 for a "fixed" model exchange . . .

But if I recall correctly, the PS3 controllers used a plain USB Type B Mini connector. If it's not charging, the battery is probably dead.

the ds3 has a mini usb b port
but the stock battery was a hard shell, not a soft pack like what was in the vid
that was a pack someone had already replaced before

thats using a smart charger or pc
they will not charge if the controller cannot talk to the charging source

the controller will flash error codes if the pack is undervolt or will not charge, but with a dumb charger it will not even do that

Just plug it into a wall charger with a old school USB plug the bigger kind cause they phased them out in 2018, we all have those micro USB plugs now, but you can still order older ones online. It's possible your battery is weak you could always crack the controller open or if your luckyfind a cable and hook a battery pack charger to it

ds4, dualsense, and many off brand controllers will charge from any kind of wallwort usb charger

most wallwort chargers are dumb and only put out 5v or more for qc/fc, but they will not charge the ds3 because they do not talk to it with usb protocol

Again you can get modern phone smart charger such as Samsung or Anker and they have smart chip inside and be able to charge DS3 controller properly. Or you can buy a charger meant for DS3 and they aren't expensive.

Apple branded wall chargers are junk though. Samsung ones capable of 15W or more or built much better. Anker also has ones just as good if not better. Such as ones that can output 15W or more but have two ports on them, such as 1x USB Type-A and 1x USB Type-C
