Quiet alternatives to the Corsair Rm650 PSU?
Looking to replace my Corsair RM650 with something quieter. The PSU is sold as being ultra quiet but this hasn't been my experience at all. The fan makes an obnoxious noise that is clearly noticeable above everything else. I RMAd the first one believing it was faulty but the second unit has the same problem.

I'm now looking for a different PSU that is actually quiet. I was looking at the RMX series which seems to have different fans but not sure if it would make much difference.

Case is a 4000D airflow. I don't mind spending a bit more as long as it doesn't have noise issues. Thinking of going to 850W and would prefer something fully modular. Anyone have recommendations?

Look at BeQuiet or ASUS ROG
Why not just swap the fan out?
how old is the psu?

if its a bad fan, you could replace it
worst case, if the psu fan is not on a plug/header, cut the wires and insulate them, and route the new psu fan to a mobo header

Both PSUs were brand new. I'm certain it's just the normal noise it makes. Getting 2 duds is very unlikely.

This was a pre built pc and I wouldn't feel comfortable opening up the PSU for anything. It definitely wouldn't end well for me.

Would rather just buy a new one.
MSI MPG A850G (not the GL), good PSU with Japanese caps.

I had an RM850 and it was almost silent when the fan was running, it's literally just bad luck on two accounts, there will always be power supplies and fans with quality control issues

yea the rm650 should be near silent
try stopping other case fans to see which ones are making the noise
What's your full.specs?

BeQuiet 850W Gold Certified PSU is usually on sale on Amazon for $99

RTX4070, Ryzen 7 7800x 3D, 32GB RAM, Corsair RM650 PSU, 2X Solidigm SSD's. Case is a 4000D airflow. The sound of the PSU isn't really loud, but clearly noticeable when the fan kicks in. To most people it would probably be white noise, but the constant stopping and starting of the fan is annoying.

I will look into the Be quiet and ASUS PSUs, also the Corsair RMX series.

So I shouldn't be clearly hearing the fan kicking in? I thought the first one was bad luck but after hearing the second one make the same sound it feels like that's just how it is.
RM series that is a non "i" or "x" are very old to say the least.

I've been using Corsair HX series since 2014 or so; they've been nothing but rock-solid and whisper quiet, don't even get hot even when applying full loads to Ryzen 7800X3D + 3080 Ti all day long. I have 2 other PCs with RM850X and those are just as good as the HX

Buy a PSU model that is actually produced in 2022 or 2023 or newer.

They've been producing newer RM series units as of 2021, that's not really old, and they're the same guts as the RMe series that launched last year. I had a 2021 RM850 and it was whisper quiet just like my HX1000i.

Again; if the model doesn't end in "i" or "x" I would just avoid it.
Those models are much improved over the original.

Maybe it's the RM650 in general, maybe those are just junk.
Cause I know the 750/850 watt versions are not.

I don't really see going below 850W anyways given current CPU and GPU power needs. And you might not need that much power right now, but you might the next time you want to upgrade your hardware. Since the chosen PSU should easily last you like 10 years, much longer then the hardware in your initial build.

My RM750 is on 24/7 in my "server" right next to me, and I'm using the Coolermaster Qube 500 so the PSU it mounted right at the front, I don't ever hear the fan in it, hear the 6800xt wind up every now and then when its transcoding something for a device in the house..
