Controller connects fine but stops sending inputs after 5s or so.
My controller (A Gamesir T4 Pro) connects just fine, and sends inputs just fine, but after around 5 seconds it just kind of gives up, whatever input was being input is done forever until I disconnect it, and it receives rumbles just fine, until I spam it too much and the rumble thing just seems to stop working, until again, I reconnect it, whenever I reconnect it, it starts working just fine again, for like 5 seconds, again, everything says the controller is still connected, but inputs don't work, lights are still turned on and everything indicates that there's nothing wrong but the inputs just don't work at all, I tried screwing around with drivers and stuff to no avail, been having this issue for a few months now but never really wanted to waste my time fixing it, but at this point it's just a pain... Constantly buying new controllers for varying issues (most of the time being that the wire port breaks) starts to weigh heavy on the wallet. Also just in case I didn't explain it properly, Steam says the controller is connected, games say the controller is connected, websites say the controller is connected, inputs just stop working after 5 seconds, everything works fine during that 5 seconds.

I have a Afterglow controller and steam always screws it up. Works ok for a minute but disconnects constantly. Had to buy a wired cheap xbox controller to work well with steam for me. If not I would experience frequent disconnects
But the issue here is that I don't know if it has anything to do with Steam directly, since it seems to still happen independently from Steam
Does it work well with games outside of steam (when it's shut off not in tray) ?
If your controller is meant to show up in WinOS as "Xbox360 controller" then go into your Steam Settings and disable the extra controller options; Xbox, PlayStation, Nin-Switch.

If your game has native controller support already, go to Properties for said Game in Steam Library and Disable Steam Input.

Then see how it all does, restart Steam Client after all of this and see.

If game lacks any controller support, leave Steam Input alone for now, launch the game, once at the in-game main menu, or within the actual game world, bring up Steam Overlay and configure the controller and see how that does.

Game has native controller support from what I can tell, but messing with all those settings never worked, it all acted the exact same no matter what, works for a few seconds then stops working, rumbles still work for some reason, and everything says my controller is connected, for some reason the first time I tried this the game started recognizing my controller as the controller for player 5? Despite me only having one controller connected? But after undoing and redoing it, it showed up as player 1, even without steam input enabled for the game, but still behaved the exact same, I'm pretty sure the issue isn't with Steam Input, and it's that like, few second timer before it stops working that bugs me honestly, I can't think of any reason as to why that would happen, unless a program is registering my controller after a few seconds and somehow making it stop working but I don't recall installing anything between the last time I used it and when it stopped working...
That doesn't sound like a "Steam" issue; sounds more like an issue with your PC or the Controller itself. I had plenty of highly used Xbox360 controllers that acted like that, I had to either fix them or retire them. The fix was to replace the entire USB cable. Can easily happen after a while that you end up with a cracked wire inside the USB cable and the connection constantly going in/out. The reason it stops working though when this issue occurs is because the OS does not like it when such a device is unplugged and plugged back in VERY quickly; which is basically what happen when the wiring causes the connection to be lost, then come back again.

Definitely don't like the sound of that... Also I kinda knew it wasn't really a Steam issue? That's why I put it in Hardware and OS, I know it' sorta off topic but I really don't know where else to ask for help with this stuff, sorry.

But yeah I guess I'll just buy a new controller then, sure wish it's something I could fix but for whatever reason I guess my controllers just really like breaking.
This controller is hard-wired?
Controller is connected via wire, if that's what you're referring to.
test it with joy.cpl

Keeps randomly disappearing from the list, and reappearing, makes it hard to "test" anything, I think Motha's hypothesis is correct, in that something in the wire or the controller's port is broken.
then its probably a bad usb cable

That pretty much tells me you have a faulty cable on the controller. You can easily replace that. However you would have to.open up the controller and de-solder the old cable and solder on the new one.

If you want a new controller look at Power-A branded XboxOne controller or Logitech F710

What is kind of bothersome is that it's a little hard to actually fix this controller since it's practically impossible to take apart for some reason, the screws don't actually do anything to keep it in place since taking them off still makes it impossible to open it, I think I might just need to get a new controller unfortunately...
Once you remove all the screws (one screw is most likely hidden behind a sticker label); you have to pry the controller apart with shim tool (or something like an old ID or Credit Card can work as well)

Pretty much all of these things require a shim tool to take apart; Laptops, Tablets, Phones; yes even Controllers. As they are meant to "snap" together. The screws just keep all of the internals in place and keep the two halves of the outer shell locked together.

I've worked on tons of controllers over the years; it's not hard even for your average teenage to fix themselves. Just takes patience and a little common sense.
